and three and two, the summarizing verses are: Entering and returning, summarizing and its distinctions, and the description of its states, are all fully shown by the grounds. Another classification is, the ground of the mundane (sentient beings), and similarly the ground of the supramundane, places, paths, and states, are fully shown by nine and eight. Another classification is, how sentient beings enter, and its state therein, how they return from them, and its state therein. The first classification, "two and" etc., should be grasped, and the order of the grounds is also shown by it. Therefore, the yogi who wants to understand complete affliction and complete purification, first needs to seek the entering into samsara, and what is returning from it, how to enter, what is the state of entering, how to return from it, what is the state of returning, that is, to seek the basic thing, the essence of sentient beings. One should also understand the state of abandoning and not abandoning afflictions, because trust will arise, therefore one should also seek the state. The ground called having the five aggregates of consciousness is based on the five aggregates of consciousness, just as in the Vinaya, starting from the king and the thief, one knows that it is a story about the king and the thief. Why are the five aggregates of consciousness shown in one ground, and also shown earlier by mind? Because for the discrimination of the object and so on, there is no difference like the karma produced by the place, because the kind is the same, so it is made into one. Therefore, because there are few things to say, it is shown earlier. The ground of mind is the opposite of this, therefore it is shown as one return, and it is shown because it is to be said. In "nature" etc., why not say other virtues etc., but only say the five meanings such as nature? Because they are the essence of those, and they include all, like this, that is the essence of its nature, and from where it arises, and what is the meaning

Because one fully understands the essence, cause, result, companions, and activities, these five meanings are taught, and others are also included. Since virtue and so on are themselves companions and so on, the various divisions of virtue and so on are also included here, so they are not taught separately. Therefore, they include everything. Therefore, conversely, these five dharmas also include expertise in the aggregates and also include the nine objects of the Buddha's teachings. Regarding what is called eye consciousness and so on, the eye is the form that is the cause. Since space is in one direction, the six substances, namely body, earth, form, smell, taste, and touch, do not exist separately from it. Alternatively, even if the alaya-consciousness is not distinctly established, it possesses eleven seeds: the five objects, the four great elements, the body, and the eye. The verse of definitive words is: Not only is it the practice of form, but also moving and instantaneous, and known as the four aspects, and arising from beautiful actions. What is called consciousness is known as object, action, and basis. It also appears as an agent, as in the sutra called "Like Food": Because it cognizes and causes to cognize, therefore it is called the aggregate of consciousness. What does it cognize? It cognizes forms, sounds, and so on, as it is said. What is called eye consciousness is the consciousness that relies on the eye, so it is called eye consciousness. Alternatively, it refers to the consciousness that benefits or harms the eye. For example, the feeling that is co-emergent with consciousness benefits or harms the sense faculty. Alternatively, it is because it transforms eye consciousness, for example, the eye faculty of those afflicted with diseases such as jaundice also transforms consciousness. Alternatively, it refers to what is harmonious for the eye, because it follows the deterioration of the eye and so on. Alternatively, what is called eye consciousness is that which is related to its own seed.

Through the power of intention, may it be manifestly accomplished through the eye. Or, in order to distinguish it from the ear and so forth, it is called the eye. Or, because consciousness arises in the direction of the place, it is called the eye. Why is only the realm of consciousness shown by its nature, and not the other realms such as the eye? Because consciousness operates in many ways, in order not to abandon the different nature of each moment. As it is said in the sutra, like a monkey. How are these modes produced? Therefore, the place and object, etc., are shown. The nature of the eye, etc., which is the nature of the first arising, enters in the same way, so it is easy to understand, so it is not necessary to show their nature definitively. In another way, the mind is the basis of the substance of the supreme master, so it is the main one, because it accomplishes other dharmas. Therefore, consciousness is not shown, but the eye and so on are not. What is called "depending on the eye, individually distinguishing form," even if only "depending on the eye, individually distinguishing" is said, it can be established, but mentioning form is to show the nature of the form of the image. Or, because the word "depending on" also points to the object, in order to distinguish the characteristics that are confused with the consciousness of the mind. For example, in the section explaining the characteristics of conditions below, it will be mentioned that color, smell, taste, and touch are the basis of consciousness that is only considered to be holding. In the clearly indicated section, it is also said that "wanting to regard objects as objects," just as it is said, the basis will produce feelings with afflictions. Alaya consciousness is mentioned as "all seeds" and so on in order to be specifically shown by the characteristics that other consciousnesses do not have. For example, eye consciousness is not the basis of the seeds of all dharmas, because even without it, the eye and so on will appear, just like smell and so on. It is also not the one that takes the body, because
