etc., because it is the place. Therefore, the word "mind" encompasses everything. How is the fourth sentence, 'possessing all seeds,' etc., established? Because it becomes the object of the place. How does it abide as the object of the place? Because it is the taker, hence the preceding and following sentences declare this. Furthermore, in another sense, it is the basis of the habits of all phenomena included in the five aggregates, and because it closely takes the object of the place, such as that which is grasped by it. As it is said in the Compendium of Determinations: 'The alaya-consciousness performs the function of the cause of the entering consciousness in two ways: giving the place and as the object of the seed.' Among them, giving the place means that the five consciousnesses arise for the colored senses that are grasped by it, but not for those that are not grasped, and so on, like this. Consciousness, name, and form, etc., rely on each other in the manner of a quiver, and abide as the object of the place, and if it is grasped by it, form also becomes counted as sentient beings. Furthermore, in another sense, the four causes are shown by the distinctions of seeing, abiding, increasing, and not decaying, and these are also shown by these four words in order. Furthermore, in another sense, there are four meanings of alaya: the co-emergent formations connect them to it as the object of the fruit, or connect it to them as the object of the cause, therefore it is called alaya; sentient beings connect it to themselves as self, therefore it is called alaya; when it first enters only in a subtle way, it is the same as accomplishment and happiness, therefore it is called alaya; it grasps the body, therefore it is called alaya, the meaning of taking is called alaya. These four meanings are connected to these four words in order. Thus, these four words only clearly show the meaning of alaya. The rest show its nature. The alaya-consciousness included in the ripened

What is meant by "consciousness"? Is it merely established by the words of the definition of the ālaya-vijñāna as stated? Or are there other methods for understanding it? Answer: Yes, there are. Briefly, there are two types of scriptures. Among them, the Mahāyāna is from the sūtra called "Admonishing the Vinaya." When a bodhisattva named "Faithful to the Profound Vinaya" asked the Blessed One, "How is the root of ignorance established?" the Blessed One replied, "Son of good family, the taking-consciousness holds the beginningless past limit of ignorance's habitual imprints as seeds." And so on. Also, in that same sūtra, it says, "Son of good family, the vipāka-vijñāna is the place of the seeds of actions." In the Dharma-abhidharma-sūtra, it also says, "The Buddha, the Blessed One, is the most excellent among the distinctions of knowable objects." Thus, it extensively explains and demonstrates that it is the knowable object itself. In the "Sūtra Requested by Holy Sagaramati," it also says, "Consciousness is the seed with outflows." Similarly, in the "Holy Ratnakūṭa Sūtra," it also says, "Extensive wisdom, when consciousness thus holds and takes this body, it is called taking-consciousness. Thus, it is one with this body in terms of formation and happiness, and therefore, due to connection and close connection, it is also called ālaya-vijñāna. Extensive wisdom, relying and abiding on that taking-consciousness, the six aggregates of consciousness arise." Among them, it says, "Relying on the eye and form with consciousness, eye-consciousness arises." And so on. In the sūtra called "The Extensive Mode of the Extremely Vast Division," it also says, "Blessed One, what is the definition of consciousness with fruit alone?" The Blessed One replied, "Son of good family, if there is no consciousness of cultivation, then the perceptions that are the cause of the establishment of name and form themselves do not exist. Thus, consciousness influenced by actions is considered to be the cause of name and form." Similarly, in the "Holy Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra"...
