When appearances and so on occur, they are called objects. If you do not acknowledge that it is the object's substance, then what other substance is its condition? You say that the object's substance is only its own appearance. These five causes are collection and the establishment of time. Collection is also indicated by the two terms, existing in ultimate truth and existing by imputation. That which has just ceased, such as what is called the manifesting cause, is what will be used subsequently, and it is distinguished by that difference. That which has ceased for a long time, such as what is called the projecting cause, is what causes the effect through the action of the habitual tendencies of virtuous and non-virtuous formations. The cause of attractiveness is one aspect that is in accordance with virtuous habitual tendencies. The cause of unattractiveness is one aspect that is in accordance with non-virtuous habitual tendencies. The cause of increase is what is collected by food, and it is only one aspect that is discordant. The cause of entering is other than the discordant cause and the cause of looking only at that. The cause of reversal is the two that are excluded. For example, it is said to be the cause of impermanence. Some say that permanence is the negation of non-existence, therefore the permanent dharma will not become the cause of anything, such as the cause of birth, and so on, and thus they explain it. If it is not so, then arising and ceasing will be no different from it. For example, it is explained that arising and ceasing means having arising and ceasing. The past is said to be without substance, therefore it is not the substance of a cause. The impermanent dharma also becomes the cause of impermanence, which is the negation of what is not, because impermanence itself is the cause, which establishes what was said earlier. Whatever arises as arising and ceasing refers to the past.
