It is the seed that generates the power to obtain arising in all existences. The so-called "black felt" is made of wool and is the clothing of ordinary people. If you ask, what kind of eye consciousness do these kinds become the object of? The answer is that it is the object of the heavenly eye, which is extremely pure. The so-called "those who share my lot" are like men born of men. The so-called "eyes clearly seeing downwards" refers to sentient beings in hell. Animals and others follow the place where they are born and are in the lower realms. Those who rely on merit go with the thought of the upper realms because of karma. The so-called "no certainty" is because it has already appeared. The so-called "staying for another seven days" is because that lifespan has ended. The so-called "even up to seven weeks" is because at that time the karmic force of the intermediate state has been exhausted. Therefore, at that time, being overcome by other karma, one will be born into other different kinds. The so-called "if the function of other karma is complete" means that if the other karma previously created has appeared, then the ripening of dwelling in the intermediate state is to complete it with what has been done. Some say that an Arhat with pride will be born as a sentient being in hell, only dwelling in the state of death, because he does not see the sign of birth, and because of wrong views, he says that there is birth there. Some say that from then on, it is at that time, for the sake of accomplishing the accumulation of all karmas. If you ask, why not do it from the very first seventh day? The answer is that because at this time the power of karma is extremely complete and the ultimate consummation has been obtained, it can attract the conditions of power that are difficult to grasp. The so-called "those who die and pass away in seven days" means that in any of the seven days, after dying and passing away from there, they will be born into another intermediate state. Here, in the intermediate state, it is not certain whether it is done by that karma or by other karma. The karma of the intermediate state is complete.

The tenet that only the results of this life are experienced is not our view. Most of what was said earlier comes from familiarity with the Abhidharma, which speaks of existence. It is also called "smell-eater" because it goes for smells. "Arhat" is because it has the meaning of going. Saying that it is nourished by smell shows that smell is its food. Saying that it goes by the going of the body, not by the going of the object of thought, means that it also has the ability to arise in other places, so like a vase, it goes by the body. Merely formless consciousness does not go by grasping at an object, because it has no place to wander. The continuum of beings does not cease or run out, because it continues like grain. Therefore, this refutes the view that arising in the place of birth is merely an object. If so, then in the Mahayana sutra, the Sutra of the Transfer of Consciousness, it says, "Well-guarded, how do you say that this consciousness, having abandoned the body, transfers and goes, like an image in a mirror and the bulge of a house?" How should this be explained? What is taught is that for those beings, like children, who transfer from this world to another world, who have long been accustomed to grasping consciousness as self and permanent, in order to refute them, it is taught that relying on these aggregates, other aggregates arise like the bulge of a house. It is not to refute the existence of the intermediate state, so what contradiction is there in that? If it is thought that the meaning of that sutra is just that, and cannot be understood in any other way, how should it be understood? It should be understood in another way, so that there is no contradiction. If in that way, merely by translating the words, the sutras can be led to other meanings, then all the sutras will be confused, so they cannot be trusted. Why would that be so? Because there is scriptural authority and reasoning, so through them the existence of the intermediate state can be established, therefore the meaning of that sutra can be led in that way.

That has been said. The Hearer Vehicle will be discussed below. Now the Great Vehicle is to be discussed. In the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness of the Holy Dharma, it is said that from the sentient beings in the Hell of Uninterrupted Suffering, the sight there is distorted and confused, like an oil lamp with exhausted oil, the form of the intermediate state of existence will become like an unhindered eight-year-old child. Similarly, in the Sutra on Entering the Womb, it is also said, Ananda, if the father and mother have not engaged in intercourse, and there is no gandharva present, Ananda, the gandharva who desires to enter in this way is called the intermediate state of existence. In various sutras, the term intermediate state of existence also appears. As it is said in the Sutra on the Seven Existences, the seven existences refer to the existence of hell beings, the existence of karma, and the intermediate state of existence, which is the gandharva. As it is said in the sutra, if three conditions are present, conception will occur: the mother is healthy and has her period, the father and mother engage in intercourse, and the gandharva is also present. The manner of arising and ceasing should be understood as before, like the two ends of a scale going up and down. The phrase "reversing there" is like chasing after prey. Wanting to play, but then being struck down. The phrase "extremely hot" refers to the fire of hell beings. Then, as before, "rejoicing there" is like being accustomed to it before. "The mother is healthy" refers to the state of the body that can be held by the womb, just as it is mentioned that she "has her period." Therefore, it is not mentioned that "the father is weak, that is the field." As it is said in the Sutra on Entering the Womb, Ananda, the term menstruation refers to time and season, and for some women it is three days. So, what are the faults of the birth place? The faults of the birth place are sudden and congenital. Sudden refers to being harmed by the wind, and so on. Congenital is...
