That which is spoken, and the Dharma that is taught with close compassion for future generations, is called the "Section of Intentional Utterances." As it is said in the scriptures, "The Bhagavan intentionally uttered." And so on. Among them, the Section of Topics is that which is spoken based on something. For example, the Bhagavan, starting with the son of the deer-keeper, the black one, spoke to the monks about talks that are in accordance with the Dharma. Also, like that which, starting from the Pratimoksha, summarizes the path arising from it into the Vinaya. And wherever the Bhagavan said, "In this topic and at this time, he spoke thus," and so on. Among them, the Section of Expressing Realization is the Sutra with examples, which makes the meaning clear. Among them, the Section of Such Occurrences is that which is related to past events, excluding the Jataka tales. Among them, the Section of Jataka Tales is that which, in the conduct of the Bodhisattva, truly speaks of one's own past lives. Among them, the Extensive Section is the path of the Bodhisattva, truly speaking of the seven grounds and the four conducts of the Bodhisattva. And the Dharma of the Buddha, truly speaking of the four completely pure ones, and the one hundred and forty unmixed Dharmas of the Buddha between all aspects and supreme knowledge, that is, those taught in the Bodhisattva grounds. Because these Dharmas are truly accomplished through the three: numerous, vast, and long immeasurable, therefore they are very vast, and therefore they are called the Extensive Section. Among them, the meaning of the Wondrous Dharma is that which truly speaks of the wondrous Dharmas of the Buddhas, Shravakas, and householders. For example, as it is said in the "Wondrous Cause Sutra." Among them, the Sections of Definitive Exposition are those Matrikas that are definitely drawn from the Sutras. Therefore, all Sutras with definitive meaning are called Matrikas. Wherever the Bhagavan taught the characteristics of the Dharma, and wherever the Shravakas, abiding in the realization attained by seeing the ground, taught the characteristics of the Dharma without error, that is also Matrika, that is, the Abhidharma.

It is indeed so. Just as the first of letters and treatises on crafts is the mother of letters, so too should the exposition of the characteristics of the Dharma be properly understood. Just as without the mother of letters, letters cannot appear, so too, if the twelve branches of the scriptures, such as the Sutra Pitaka, do not have their characteristics established by the Dharma, they will not appear; but if the characteristics are established, they will become clear. Because of expressing the non-different characteristics, that mother is called the Abhidharma. That which relies on that mother to explain other Sutras is called the section that shows the establishment. There are three ways to instigate it: it should be appropriately stated according to the circumstances of things, times, and persons. It is for the sake of reversing a certain person's behavior or desire, for the sake of correct teaching, and for the sake of making them truly happy. After stating the instigation, the meaning should be stated. There are two kinds of meaning: the condensed meaning and the meaning of words. The condensed meaning should be stated in four ways: namely, accomplishing the Sutra Pitaka of definite meaning, showing the limits of things, proof, and by results. Proof is again of two kinds: wrong and right. Its result is also of two kinds: the result of correct proof and the result of wrong proof. The meaning of words should also be stated in four ways: showing the enumeration of names, showing the body by the nature of characteristics, showing the definite words, and by various distinctions. Showing the definite words should be combined in five ways: namely, by sign, nature, function, Dharma, cause, and result. Various distinctions should also be viewed in five ways: distinctions of nature, distinctions of realms, distinctions of time, distinctions of state, and distinctions of persons. The distinction of nature is as follows: form is the ten sense bases of form. Feeling is of three kinds.
