A Compilation of Explanations from the Treatise on the Stages of Yogic Practice. Asanga. A Compilation of Explanations from the Treatise on the Stages of Yogic Practice. Asanga. ༈! The Compilation of Explanations is Here. A Compilation of Explanations from the Treatise on the Stages of Yogic Practice. Homage to the Three Jewels! What is the Compilation of Explanations? In general, it is: the body and the explanation, the words and their meaning, the Dharma and the instigation, the meaning and the answers to objections, the connection and the speaking, the teaching and the retinue and the listening, the collected praises of the Buddha, and the benefits of expansion and learning. Of these, the body of the Sutra is, in brief, of two kinds: words and meaning. Of these, the words are the basis, and the meaning is to be understood as that which abides therein. The collection of both of these is what is to be known. What is the explanation? In brief, it should be viewed in five ways: the Dharma, the instigation, the meaning, the answers to objections, and the connection. Of these, the words are of six kinds: collections of names, collections of sentences, collections of letters, speech, aspect, and teaching. Of these, the collections of names are the terms that make one understand correctly. These are also of twelve kinds: arising from imputation, the true object, related to the genus, related to the individual, arising from qualities, arising from convention, famous, not famous, clear, not clear, concise, and extensive. Of these, names arising from imputation are, for example, internal speech called sentient being and life, and so forth, and external ones called pot and cloth, and so forth. The names of true objects are, for example, the sense faculties and objects such as the eye and form. Names related to the genus are sentient being and form, feeling and the great elements, and so forth. Names related to the individual are the Buddha's blessing and the qualities of the spiritual friend, and blue and yellow, and so forth. Names arising from qualities are, for example, that which can be seen is form, that which causes feeling is feeling, that which makes the day is the sun, that which burns is

For example, like the word "fire" and so on. A name derived from terminology is like calling a poor person rich, and so on. Furthermore, whatever name is established without relying on meaning. A famous name is any name that is universally understood. An obscure name is the opposite of that. A clear name is one whose meaning is known. An unclear name is one whose meaning is not known, such as a vidyā-mantra for running. A concise name is any single letter. An extensive name is any name with many letters. Among these, collections of sentences are those that fully possess names and letters. These are of six types: incomplete sentences, complete sentences, sentences to be proven, proving sentences, indicative sentences, and explanatory sentences. Among these, incomplete sentences should be viewed in terms of incomplete words and incomplete meanings. A complete sentence is one that becomes complete with a second sentence. For example, the phrase "all sins" is incomplete, and the meaning of "all sins" is also incomplete, so it needs the phrase "do not" to become complete. A sentence to be proven is one where the former is proven by the latter. For example, the statement "Alas, conditioned phenomena are impermanent" needs to be proven by "they are subject to arising and ceasing." Among these, the former, which needs to be proven, is the sentence to be proven, and what proves it is the proving sentence. Among these, an indicative sentence is like, for example, "the noble ones." An explanatory sentence is like "those who have truly passed away" and "the noble persons." Alternatively, complete and incomplete names are sentences, because these two bring it to its ultimate meaning. Among these, the collection of letters is the forty-nine letters. Among these, intention preceding expression is a name. A name preceding expression is a collection of sentences and letters. Whatever is a sentence is also a name and a letter. Whatever is a single letter is not a sentence.
