Furthermore, when noble disciples listen to the Dharma with focused attention, they abandon the five things and perfect the practice of the seven things, so it is said. Similarly, when noble disciples listen to the Dharma with reverence, they recognize that all arising phenomena are of the nature of cessation, thereby generating a Dharma eye free from dust and defilement in all phenomena, and they fully attain the merit of obtaining the fruit of stream-entry. Or similarly, they can attain up to the state of an Arhat, or fully attain the merit of the fruit of an Arhat. Or similarly, they can attain self-awakening, or fully attain the merit of a Bodhisattva. Or similarly, they can fully attain the merit of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete awakening. Or similarly, they will manifestly accomplish worldly and transmundane meditative stabilizations and liberations, as well as samadhi and attainments, so it is said. Second Chapter. Therein it is said: At the time of initiating a discussion, one should first praise the Buddha. Praise is of two types: concise and elaborate. Concise praise can be understood through five aspects: excellent form, peacefulness, wisdom, accomplishment, and power. Excellent form can be understood through the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks of a great being. Peacefulness can be understood through guarding the doors of the senses, and through completely destroying afflictions along with their imprints. Wisdom can be understood through having unobstructed and unattached knowledge of the past, future, and present times, as well as phenomena not encompassed by time. Accomplishment can be understood through perfectly accomplishing benefit for oneself and others. Power can be understood through the Tathagata's various superknowledges. Furthermore, the concise praise of the Bhagavan can be understood through six aspects: because all qualities are complete, because there is no impurity, because it is not deceptive, because it is incomparable, because it has the activity of benefiting oneself and others, and because it has power over that activity.

The detailed explanation of these distinctions is as follows: as stated in the Compendium of Determinations. Among them, the detailed praise of the Bhagavan is: the Bhagavan is of endless praise because he possesses immeasurable qualities. Similarly, because he creates the light of wisdom, he is the giver of light; because he destroys the darkness of ignorance, he is also the remover of darkness. Similarly, because he possesses three eyes, he is the one with eyes; because he knows the uncommon noble truths, he is the seer of reality; because of the perfection of discipline and the possession of discipline, he is also the accomplished ascetic. Similarly, he is the supreme of the two-legged and the excellent of the guides, he is sacred; among the practitioners, he is the youngest of the practitioners; he is also a rare jewel in the world. Similarly, he is the subsequent loving one, possessing compassion, desiring benefit, desiring to help, and also the author of compassion. Similarly, he is the eye, the wisdom, the meaning, the Dharma, the one who clearly shows the meaning, and also the one who relies on the meaning. Similarly, because he first realized the noble eightfold path, and because he realized it himself, he is the one who realizes the unrealized meaning; in order to establish the unestablished Brahmacharya, he is the knower of the path; he is also the indicator of the path, the speaker of the path, and the guide of the path. Similarly, because he is free from timidity and the place of timidity, he is the lion of men; because he leads the vast Sangha, he is the bull king of men; because he is the supreme of the Sangha, he is the lord of men; because he has no faults, he is the elephant of men; because his mind is extremely subdued, he is the tamed horse of men; because he overwhelms all people with lineage, ancestry, and family, he is the holy man; because he overwhelms all people with discipline, practice, knowledge, and power, he is the supreme man; because he is not defiled by worldly dharmas, he is also the white lotus of men. Similarly, because there is no equal, he is the unequal; because there is no equal in the past and future, he is the unequal and the equal.
