are good and excellent. The Blessed One has reproached in many ways things like the place of continuous obscuration of regret. Whatever obstructs, dwells much, and accepts, if it does not eliminate, one thinks, "That is not good and excellent for me." Recognizing this, one eliminates the arising of regret. In this way, one rises from a fall. It should be recognized that the five dharmas that accord with the Vinaya are these. A bhikṣu who is diligent in the Vinaya accords with these. What are the five? They are dwelling, place, support, enjoyment, and action is the fifth. What is dwelling? A bhikṣu who is diligent in the precepts of the Vinaya dwells with five places of perception. What are the five? When entering a village, one should have the perception of entering a prison; in a monastery, one should always have the perception of a śramaṇa. The perception of a śramaṇa is this: "I have abandoned the appearance of a householder and have accepted an ugly color, so my form is unsightly." And so forth, as the twenty-two places are extensively described in the sutras, one should individually contemplate them. Regarding food, one should always have the perception of medicine for illness; in extreme solitude, starting from the forms that can be perceived by the eye and the sounds that can be perceived by the ear, one should perceive oneself as blind, deaf, and mute; when sleeping, one should have the perception of sleeping alone like a wild animal in a solitary mountain. A bhikṣu who is diligent in the precepts of the Vinaya dwells with these five places of perception. Dwelling with these places of perception, even if one is allowed to dwell in the enjoyment of clothes, food, and bedding suitable for a king, one will not follow the alms of desire. What is a place? There are five places: the place of a bhikṣu, the place of a bhikṣuṇī, the place of a heretic, the place of all afflictions, and the place of not all afflictions. The place of a bhikṣu is where new bhikṣus, intermediate bhikṣus, and elder bhikṣus dwell. The place of a bhikṣuṇī is also where former bhikṣuṇīs and the three types of bhikṣuṇīs dwell. The place of a heretic is

Where are the abodes of naked non-Buddhists, ascetics, cattle owners, and various others of their kind. A place of complete affliction is where all actions are absent, or some of them are absent. A place without complete affliction is where all actions are present. Among these, the abode of a bhikkhu that is not completely afflicted is known to be where a retinue with essence resides, while a place of complete affliction is where a retinue with dregs resides. Among these, a bhikkhu who desires to be a bhikkhu should examine the abode of a bhikkhu that is completely afflicted. Having completely abandoned respect, one should not reside there. If harm occurs, one should stay temporarily, and if one is on a journey, one should stay temporarily, except for those who stay in order to dissuade those bhikkhus from unwholesome abodes and place them in wholesome abodes. In the abode of bhikkhunis, one should only not reside, except for the aforementioned reasons, which are as before. The same applies to the abode of non-Buddhists. In the abode of a bhikkhu that is not completely afflicted, one should examine it for as long as one lives, and even for the sake of mere livelihood, one should reside there. Thus, in abodes without doubt and speculation, if that bhikkhu resides there, the wise who practice the same as Brahma will not have doubt and speculation. What is reliance? There are five reliances. What are the five? They are reliance on villages, etc., reliance on abodes, reliance on individuals, reliance on requisites such as Dharma robes, and reliance on conduct. Among these, relying on a village or town, wherever one resides in the direction of the country, that is reliance on that village. Relying and residing near a garden of the Sangha, or a monastery, or a house, or construction work, that is reliance on that abode. Relying and residing near a benefactor, or a teacher, or a preceptor, or a speaker, or a reminder, or an admonisher, or a follower, or a Dharma teacher, that is reliance on that individual. Relying and residing on bad or good requisites such as Dharma robes, that is reliance on those requisites such as Dharma robes. That that
