The fault of proclaiming and concealing what should not be said or concealed, and of not relying on what should be relied upon and relying on what should not be relied upon. For a beginner, although the four root downfalls have the fault of heavy objects, if the beginner only knows that "this Dharma will hinder the practice of a renunciant," even for the sake of life, he will not violate it. Just like not considering the practice itself, relying on a flawless thought, there is no severe affliction. For those whose minds are very strong, if things are not like that, then there is no downfall for them. For those who fall into downfall solely because of their strong minds, even if a fault occurs, if they do not generate a concealing mind, then they can recover and are eligible to receive the fruits of practice. Other than that, it is a heavy fault, shamelessness, the severe affliction of shamelessness, possessing the severe affliction of shamelessness, is an inappropriate Dharma, and is a Dharma that cannot be completely liberated from suffering. The robes and bowls, etc., given by the Blessed One, are blessed and examined before being used. Separating completely from those and using them without examination, the downfall associated with this is established based on the fault of not possessing and not knowing contentment. Taking robes and offerings from a non-relative monk, living together, at inappropriate times, preaching without the appointment of the monastic community, similarly, going elsewhere with a woman without a travel companion, and similar actions, should be understood as the fault of associating with others. Near the village, improperly using alms, sitting, washing hands and bowls, being invited before and after meals, without informing the householders who are sitting in the houses.
