If one cultivates fertile land well and uses it to offer to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, that too is pretending to be the true Dharma. If one is well-versed in the Vinaya, which is well-spoken, and after ordaining, argues with each other because of what they have heard, that too is pretending to be the true Dharma. If one abandons monks who are content with little, and instead approaches and reveres those monks who are known to have great merit, receiving offerings such as robes, and engages in conversation with them, saying "Please come," making each other happy, flattering them, and showing a distorted mind towards the superior monks, that too is pretending to be the true Dharma. If one abandons the profound sutras spoken by the Tathagata, which are endowed with emptiness, and instead prides oneself on being skilled in the difficult secret words of worldly affairs, and makes others believe that one is also skilled, that too is pretending to be the true Dharma. If one does not punish those who are violent and immoral, but instead thinks of harming those who are violent and immoral, that too is pretending to be the true Dharma. If one strives to cultivate hypocritical behavior, that too is pretending to be the true Dharma. If one obtains great profit through the secret words of worldly affairs, that too is pretending to be the true Dharma. If one harms others, obtains wealth through non-Dharma means, and then performs virtuous deeds accompanied by faults, that too is pretending to be the true Dharma. If someone establishes these things that pretend to be the true Dharma as the root of the teachings and the root of actions, and they are meaningless, that too is pretending to be the true Dharma. Therefore, it should be recognized that all these things that pretend to be the true Dharma are contrary to the precepts. Evil friends are widespread, and should be recognized as taught in the Hearer's Ground and the Bodhisattva Ground. In short, whatever leads to carelessness, misconduct, and clinging to inferior virtue and qualities should be recognized as an evil friend. Afflictions that are of an inferior and ignorant nature.

It should be recognized that whichever aspect is stronger, that is foolish and has many afflictions. If one has not cultivated virtuous qualities such as faith in the past, then one's faith and so on are inferior in this life. Even if one strives in this life to be liberated from suffering, one cannot cultivate, because one has not accumulated in the past, so one's strength is weak in this life. It should be recognized that these five qualities are not in accordance with the training. The five qualities that are the opposite of these should be recognized as being in accordance with the training. A monk who possesses these strives for discipline, which is to accomplish the training perfectly. Possessing these conducive qualities, his five qualities are what protect the foundation of morality, namely: excellent manifestation, thorough inquiry, individual liberation, antidote cultivation, and faith. Among these, it is not the case that one ordains out of distress from debt, but as before, ordaining with the thought of liberation from suffering and the desire to learn, that is excellent manifestation. Having manifested in this way, starting from falling and not falling and liberation from falling, one thoroughly inquires of those who are the monks who hold the Sutras, Vinaya, and Matrikas, and they also teach him, this is called thorough inquiry. In the three times, one individually analyzes one's own morality, and if one sees no fault in the morning, one dwells following it day and night with great joy. If one sees a fault, one corrects it according to the Dharma, this is called individual liberation. At every time, whether it is the first or last part of the night, or even during the day, one remembers and cultivates the antidotes to afflictions such as desire, and one is not satisfied with just the sound of morality and speech, it should be recognized that this is antidote cultivation. Believing that one does not want the consequences of falling, it should be recognized that this is faith. Relying on having excellent manifestation, one can do the activities of the other four. Through thorough inquiry, one can eliminate the falling that arises from not knowing.
