Existence and non-existence are like this: in this very life, to fully and truly know. The enlightenment of the Buddhas is distinguished by three aspects: understanding all knowable things, truly understanding existent and non-existent entities, and understanding all dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of universal defilement and complete purification. Therefore, in those three places, others make requests to the Bhagavan. All compounded phenomena that arise together generate conceptualizations that confuse the mind and wrongly grasp at characteristics. Therefore, the Tathagata distinguishes in order to lead the Shravakas to enter into the certainty of characteristics. Those who know the reality of characteristics will not be deceived themselves, and will also be able to show it to others without hesitation. Through the gate of offering the precepts of ordination, one should understand the establishment of observing objects. Through the gate of the broken precepts of ordination itself, one should understand that the very conduct of ordination itself is unfavorable, and is the basis for concealing the faults of the mind. Due to the lack of shame and embarrassment, one is inevitably bound by the tasting of flavors, and whatever the object of focus, that is called indulging in the tasting of flavors. It also disturbs the mind in a way that cannot be used for doing great virtuous deeds. Through it, one will also universally engage in misconduct, and sinful thoughts will also be concealed, thus generating concealment. All of these together are called the object of indulging in the tasting of flavors, which is the basis for concealing the faults of the mind. Practicing guarding the sense faculties will give rise to afflicted mental activity arising from the accumulation of ignorance and born from contact, based on hearing non-dharma. Through it, one does not truly know the faults of the manifestation of the place of birth in the future. If one does not truly know, desire will arise. If desire arises, one will do actions associated with it, and so on. If one does and accumulates actions associated with it, the six sense sources will manifest in the future, and in this order, in an inconsistent manner...

The six sense sources arise from the cause of karma. Karma arises from the cause of existence. Craving arises from the cause of ignorance. Ignorance arises from the cause of improper attention. Improper attention arises from the cause of contact conjoined with ignorance. Therefore, past karma is the condition for the six sense sources to be experienced in this life. Karma in this life is the condition for the six sense sources to be experienced after birth. Or it is the basis for experiencing in other instances. Similarly, craving and so forth should also be understood by combining them appropriately with karma and so forth. Furthermore, birth into existence is manifestly accomplished by two factors: karma that gives rise to existence and craving that gives rise to existence. These sentient beings are said to go according to their karma. It should not be said that they go according to their craving. Why is that? Craving, in brief, is of three types: craving for desire, craving for form, and craving for formlessness. Among these, craving for desire is unwholesome; although it possesses a result of maturation, it does not cause the result of maturation to ripen in the evil destinies unless it has instigated sinful actions. When the feeling born from the contact conjoined with ignorance, which is associated with craving in the desire realm, becomes desirable, and attachment arises towards the object of desire, hatred arises towards the object of hatred, and delusion arises towards the object of delusion, then one engages in all kinds of unwholesome actions. Therefore, it is due to that karma that one is born in the evil destinies, and not merely due to the entanglement of desire, hatred, and delusion. Craving merely serves as a helper when the result of maturation of that karma is manifestly accomplished. Towards a pleasing object, one engages in all kinds of virtuous deeds with body, speech, and mind through desire, and by this cause, one will be born in a good destiny. There, one casts the pleasing result of maturation, and when it is manifestly accomplished, karma should become a secondary cause, but the nature of craving, which is afflicted, is not like that.

The craving for the formless is not non-virtuous. However, it is afflicted, because that is solely without maturation in all of everything. If one becomes craved by the craving for form and the formless, then relying on hearing the sacred Dharma, one roughly sees the desire realm, and the aggregation of touch, the worldly feeling arising from touch, in accordance with proper attention, and having encountered and associated with the attachment, hatred, and ignorance of the desire realm, one performs actions arising from meditating on virtuous contaminated things. Therefore, one will be born there through the action of what is done here, but not through afflicted craving. Craving merely performs the function of a companion when the maturation of that action is manifestly accomplished. Therefore, beings go according to their actions, and it should not be said that they go according to their craving. External objects, through the worldly designation, some fruits appear sometimes empty from the feeler and sometimes not empty, and just as with the fruit, so it is with the cause. That is the emptiness of convention, and should not be called the emptiness of ultimate meaning. At all times, only the result and cause of all compounded things exist, but what is called the ultimate emptiness is when there is no feeler or doer. That is to be understood in seven ways, namely: the emptiness of the later extreme, the emptiness of the earlier extreme, the emptiness of the middle extreme, the emptiness of permanence, the emptiness of self, the emptiness of the feeler, and the emptiness of the doer. Among these, in the future time, compounded things remain in the aggregates of compounded things, and when compounded things arise from that, they will not come. If that were to exist, then those that are naturally completely established in the future time could neither arise nor appear as impermanent, since they would appear and also remain. Therefore, at the time of arising, they do not come from anywhere, nor do they change from non-existence to existence, and this is the emptiness of the later extreme. From that, in the past time, compounded things
