Now these are assembled as aggregates, and there, actions arise and cease, etc., and do not become something else. If they were to become something else, then the collection of past actions would exist by its own nature, and therefore the cessation of actions would also necessarily not exist, and if cessation did not exist, then it would also appear in the category of permanence and not exist. Therefore, when actions cease, they do not become anything else, but without relying on the cause of ceasing from existence, they naturally become non-existent, and this is the emptiness of the prior extreme. When actions arise for a moment and do not cease, they appear only as actions, and for these, there is no action that is not that, and they do not become different in meaning, and this should be known as the emptiness of the middle extreme, the emptiness of permanence, and the emptiness of self. If there is no self, then the actions that are the result are also empty of the feeler, and the actions that are the cause are also empty of the doer, and this is the emptiness of the feeler and the doer. Because there is no feeler and no doer, therefore only the previous arising of action ceases, and only another arising of action will arise, but there is completely no one who abandons the previous ones, and there is completely no one who takes the later ones. As it is said, the phenomena that arise in dependence themselves produce phenomena, although for all phenomena without a doer, no one produces anything, yet if this exists, then that arises, and if this arises, then that is born, and for the cause and effect that are only phenomena, the name is given that the phenomena themselves produce phenomena. For an object that is in accordance with pleasure, one approaches and clings to it in five ways, and thus grasps the signs that are not in accordance with the way. One generates desire. One repeatedly recollects. One completely seeks. Because of this, one engages in merit and non-merit. Just as it is with an object that is in accordance with pleasure, so it should be understood that it should be applied accordingly to objects that are in accordance with displeasure and equanimity. The difference is that those that are in accordance with displeasure will become harmful thoughts.

They become deluded with respect to those that are in accordance with equanimity. The remainder is as before. When a bhikṣu, an arhat who has exhausted the outflows, dwells closely in all places, he does not constantly become a cause for the arising of afflictions, even through the door of mere forgetfulness. Therefore, because he constantly dwells without any afflictions, he is called constantly dwelling. Whatever pleasant or unpleasant feeling is in accordance with the aspect of dwelling closely, even that does not cause the arhat to become pleasant or unpleasant; it is not like that with whatever is virtuous. Those things that are to be constantly dwelt in are difficult, supreme, and without fault; therefore, those who possess them are rare and should be known as the supreme object of offerings, and should be extensively connected up to being worthy of invitation. This is like what occurs in the Collection of Categories. The perfectly spoken Dharma and Vinaya, the teacher who shows them, should be known by two aspects. The perfect śrāvakas of the śrāvakas should also be known by two aspects. By which two aspects should the teacher be known as perfect? For example, in order to engage in the statement that whatever feelings there are, these are suffering here, through the door of accomplishing benefit for others, one should show the support of the feelings, show the basis, show the dwelling closely that becomes completely afflicted, and show the distinction between the opposing side and the antidote, the sign of the teacher, and show the definite arising in all aspects; this is the first perfect teacher. Or, through the door of accomplishing benefit for oneself, dwelling without any afflictions by means of the three unmixed close placements of mindfulness, this should be known as the second perfect teacher. How should the perfect śrāvaka be known by those two aspects? Knowing that the Dharma taught by the Tathāgata is immeasurable, one is not able to go to the other shore of hearing. And even if one is able to go to the other shore, that is in order to definitely arise by diligently practicing the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma, not merely for the sake of grasping.
