and conjunction. Similarly, connected with food and truth, realms and feelings, Śrāvakas, connected with what is taught by the Tathāgata, mindfulness, right abandonment, the basis of miraculous power, faculties, powers, branches of enlightenment, branches of the path, mindfulness of breathing in and out, the trainings, etc., having faith after knowing, and having retinues by being under the control of the eight assemblies. All those things that are correctly connected should be understood in three ways. What are the three? Who teaches, what is taught, and to whom is it taught? Teaching Śrāvakas or Tathāgatas, for example: the category of what is taught by the Śrāvakas and what is taught by the Buddha. What is understood and by what is it understood, that is the teaching, for example: the five aggregates of appropriation, the six sources, the category of those connected with causes, and the category of the collection of paths. It is taught for the sake of the retinue of monks and Māras, etc., for example: just as it arises from the category of right speech. These are called all, for example: who teaches, what is taught, and to whom is it taught. The speech that possesses all the bases arises from being correctly connected, therefore it is called correctly connected. The speech itself that is connected with this is taught in another way by the intermediate sūtras, therefore it is called intermediate. Similarly, it is taught in another way by the long sūtras, therefore it is called long. Starting from one, two, three, etc., it arises in the manner of one category after another, therefore it is called arising from one. These are called according to the scriptures, because the teacher and the disciple have come down in succession from one to another, therefore it is called scripture. This is the basic sūtra. Among the twelve branches of the scriptures, all except the extremely extensive part are related to the Śrāvakas. The extremely extensive part itself is the sūtra of the Great Vehicle, and its distinction should also be understood as before. These four types of sūtras are also for understanding the meaning that has not been understood, etc.
