The first is guided by cultivating the first faculty (referring to the faculty of faith, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom, specifically the faculty of faith). The second is guided by the second faculty. The third is guided by the third faculty. Similarly, it should be understood that cultivating ethics, cultivating the mind, and cultivating wisdom are also guided by three methods. Among these, regarding the distinctions between agreeable and disagreeable objects, the distinctions between benefiting and harming sentient beings, the distinctions between sentient beings possessing virtues and faults, and the distinctions between sentient beings being lovable and unlovable, it should be understood that some are completely and certainly agreeable, some are completely and certainly disagreeable, some become agreeable through guidance, and some become disagreeable. Among these, due to the differences in objects, some objects are completely and certainly agreeable, and some are completely and certainly disagreeable. Guidance is that some are slightly agreeable, and some are slightly disagreeable. Similarly, some sentient beings are completely and certainly beneficial, some sentient beings are completely and certainly harmful, and some sentient beings are both beneficial and harmful. Some sentient beings are completely and certainly endowed with virtues, some are completely and certainly endowed with faults, and some sentient beings are endowed with both virtues and faults. For those sentient beings from whom love arises from love, those are completely and certainly pleasing and agreeable. For those sentient beings from whom hatred arises from hatred, those are completely and certainly disagreeable. For those sentient beings from whom hatred arises from love, and for those sentient beings from whom love arises from hatred, those are called agreeable and disagreeable. Among these, when one truly sees the faults of misconduct in this life and the next, one completely abandons it and cultivates good conduct. Being blamed by others through all avenues possessing six places is a fault of this life. Going to bad destinies is a fault of the next life. Among these, being blamed by others refers to the arising of sin, unpleasantness, lack of fame, and non-laudatory verses (referring to a bad name) from non-Buddhists, the world, and retinues in all directions and corners; this should be understood. The remainder is as it was said. Among these, cultivating mindfulness.

For the realm of various ordinary individuals, it is the beginning of contemplating the limb of mindfulness and correct Bodhicitta. In the realm of learners, it is practice. In the realm of non-learners, it becomes the complete practice. When practicing the limb of enlightenment, because the realm of abandonment has not been attained, when desiring the realm of abandonment, it is relying on solitude. Because the realm of detachment from desire has not been attained, when desiring that, it is relying on detachment from desire. Because the realm of cessation has not been attained, when desiring that, it is relying on cessation. Abandoning the practice of the lowest limb of enlightenment, transforming it from higher to higher into the most excellent, is completely transforming it through abandonment. In this regard, a monk who guards the senses is endowed with shame and embarrassment. Therefore, he refrains from sinful conduct and cultivates virtuous conduct. Thus, practicing virtuously in this way, there will be no regret. Without regret, there will be extreme joy as a precursor, transforming into Samadhi. When the mind is evenly placed, one will see things as they truly are. When seeing things as they truly are, one should know that in this order, wisdom and liberation will be perfected. Some ascetics and Brahmins, without having tamed their own senses, merely by not turning towards objects, think that they have guarded their senses, and thus wrongly teach others how to tame the senses. Those people are particularly attached to their students, and become attached to some and angry with others. It is like this: because of practicing and not practicing, they engage in what is pleasing and displeasing. Even the subtle aspects of their own defilements are not understood by wisdom. Therefore, they presumptuously think that they are those who have tamed their senses. Those who hold acceptable views among them separate the senses from objects and abide alone. They do not comprehend their own freedom from defilements in that object of focus. They are neither taming the senses nor striving diligently for the sake of taming the senses. They merely have faith in the words of others, and thus have wrong faith and wrong pride.
