When feeling ceases, seeing non-self as pure, seeing liberation from future suffering as pure, and seeing liberation from present suffering as pure. Among these, through the distinctions of internal and external sources, consciousness, contact, feeling, perception, mind, and the aggregates of craving, truly seeing non-self, thereby generating the first pure view through the principle of dependent origination. Just as light depends on oil, and shadow depends on a tree, if these are absent, then those too are absent. Similarly, the feelings arising from the causes of internal and external sources, if all sources cease, then truly seeing that they also cease, thereby generating the pure view of seeing the absence of self and Nirvana as peaceful. In this life, cutting off all afflictions with the sword of wisdom, truly seeing this, thereby generating the pure view of seeing liberation from all future suffering. In the realms of pleasure, pain, and neither pleasure nor pain, truly seeing the absence of attachment, absence of hatred, and absence of delusion, in the path of seeing, truly seeing the mind of mindfulness abiding steadfastly, and in the path of cultivation, truly seeing the cultivation of the limbs of enlightenment, namely, to exhaust all outflows, and in this life, the pure view of liberation from all afflictions and suffering. Bhikshus, if the senses are not restrained and remain unrestrained, then the mind will become attached to objects and become distracted, and one will experience two kinds of suffering arising from evil destinies and doubt in the Dharma. Why is that? Because one does not diligently cultivate the practice of the body, and the practice of the body can cultivate the discipline of the limbs of abiding in peace. Because of not cultivating the discipline of the limbs of abiding in peace, one does not diligently cultivate the practice of the mind, and the practice of the mind can cultivate the samadhi of the limbs of abiding in peace.

And, the mind will not become very subdued, therefore, one will experience the suffering of bad rebirths. If there is no great subduing, then by what means will one not touch the samadhi that knows things as they are? If one does not know things as they are, then one will become a doubter and a skeptic. These two abide in suffering, because they have not guarded the senses, they abide in suffering and without pleasure, this is the fault of not guarding the senses in this life. The opposite of this should be understood as benefit. Bhikshus, strive to be free from desire and attachment to desire. Blocking afflictions with the path of correct yoga, do we not feel that we have desire for desires even though we have desire? Or do we think there is none? Have we abandoned it? Have we not abandoned it? By focusing on the attractive characteristics, one ascertains, and relying on the mind that examines, one desires to realize that one has not abandoned afflictions from desire, so the pervasive thoughts of desire, which have become the basis and place of afflictions, will arise. If they are like being robbed by them, knowing that these are what cause one to degenerate, one will not engage in them. If one engages in them, then even if one obtains a little samadhi, one will completely degenerate from it, let alone progress? If one does not engage, then one will neither degenerate nor progress. If one does not even investigate, then even so, one will degenerate because of having manifest pride. Because if one investigates, then one will certainly realize, and also seize the mind and gather it, and after fully knowing it as it is, one engages in it, therefore one will not completely degenerate. Just as one strives to be free from desire and attachment to desire, the above (other afflictions) should also be understood in the same way. If, no matter how one examines with strong views, the pervasive thoughts of desire do not arise, then he will be certain that the source from which afflictions arise by focusing on what, that source has been suppressed. Because he has suppressed that source, he has completely transcended the position of the learner, and because he has power over his own mind, he is like a king.
