Whoever is a person who does not wish to pass into Nirvana on earth, and whoever is negligent in learning, thus clinging to all places, dwelling in association with householders and renunciates, this is the first wrong practice. Furthermore, for a person who wishes to be born in samsara, with the intention of being born in samsara, making aspirations and engaging in pure conduct, this is the second wrong practice. Regarding external objects previously abandoned, with a longing gaze, clinging to all places, abandoning the training and falling into decline, this is the third wrong practice. Thus, being delighted by gains acquired through opportune moments and by reverence, a person who is particularly attached to gains and reverence, clinging to all places, from the corruption of moral discipline up to the extensive conduct as mentioned earlier, should be combined. This is because, looking to gains and reverence, one neither offers the training nor pays attention to faults that cause the corruption of moral discipline; this is the fourth wrong practice. A monk who is not skilled in the meaning of the Dharma, if he hears other discourses that contain various forms of words for the same meaning, will become doubtful and displeased, thinking, "Which of these is true?" These four are the means of examining with pure wisdom vision. What are the four? Namely: Like this, diligently examining the three kinds of suffering, knowing as it is the cause of the arising of feelings, and knowing correctly the cause of the support, the basis, and the place, and likewise, knowing correctly the cause of abiding, and likewise, the support, the object, the nature, all companions, pleasure, suffering, and the formations of the place that is neither suffering nor pleasure, with correct knowledge. The Tathagata subdues those who are not skilled in the meaning and who are doubtful by two causes. Namely: In order to abandon doubt, he teaches the difference between words and definitive words, but the meaning is not different. He also speaks extensively about the meaning of the teachings, so that he will clearly understand the meaning. Teachings

What is the extensive meaning of this? Up to the stage of the trainee and below the stage of the arhat, this is called the extensive meaning of the teaching. Furthermore, one who abides in the final authority of the Tathagata's discipline, fully matured, possesses the Dharma of no-self, is well-held and firm, and possesses the correct view arising from hearing and thinking. Relying on it, abiding in it, one dwells alone in solitude. In order to abandon the consciousness associated with the appropriation of the four abodes of consciousness, with the internal and external sense bases as objects, one cultivates mindfulness related to the body, fully grasped by shamatha and vipashyana. Through the cause of universal dependence, one accurately focuses on the first abode of consciousness as it is, and the union of shamatha and vipashyana, which is close to manifest realization, will arise. After that, the truths will also be comprehended, and one will also follow by means of cultivating the path of how to attain, and one will attain the exhaustion of defilements. Just as one accurately focuses on the first abode of consciousness, similarly, it should be understood in the same way up to the fourth abode of consciousness. As before, for a person who has not guarded the doors of the senses, if attachment to afflictive entanglement manifests, for the mundane and the supramundane, for individual discrimination, and for the power of cultivation, and for the absence of an antidote, for one who has the attitude of accepting arising afflictions, the demon will think, "This is one who has the attitude of accepting," and having recognized this, will come in the manner of finding an object. Thus, he will find an opportunity to enter a person who has the attitude of accepting afflictions, and an object to abide in his continuum. That person who has not guarded the doors of the senses has little desire for nirvana and little desire for sensual pleasures, like a house of reeds and dry grass. There, if the demon sends the swift fire of grass, the fire of objects that will cause attachment to arise, he will gain a place to dwell. That is because one is overcome by objects through the two causes of causing unarisen entanglements to arise and causing arisen entanglements to persist.
