Therefore, if one can see the faults of not going forth from now on, this is the small discipline of the world. Furthermore, some here focus only on speed, thereby abandoning various places. If one can see the faults of not going forth from now on, this is called the intermediate discipline of the world. If one relies on it, one will obtain the nine ways of abiding in the mind, and the four types of attention that summarize them. For example, just as the karma of a Hearer arises. If one obtains it, then ordinary people can be freed from attachment to desire. A yogi who has entered the discipline was formerly like a farmer, but now is like a master, like a king. He obtains the first coarse feeling arising from absorption, recognizes that it is the basis of carelessness and a great place, and then, by the power of hearing the holy Dharma, abides like a minister in the shell of tranquility, arising from higher vision. Therefore, he understands that that feeling is also dependent arising, and if it is dependent arising, then it is impermanent. From that feeling, with attention endowed with the characteristics of faults, he causes the mind to be free from attachment. Having become free from attachment, by relying on the distinctions of absorption, he sees ten different kinds, and by the distinctions of time, he sees eight kinds. Among them, the distinctions based on absorption are as follows: with investigation and analysis, without investigation but only analysis, without investigation and without analysis, possessing joy, possessing happiness, possessing equanimity, declining, abiding, progressing, and being in accordance with the decisive factor. Through these ways, by the manner in which feelings arise, abide, and cease, one sees countless kinds of distinctions that have changed from time. Having realized the impermanence of those feelings and the various distinctions of entering, in short, one can completely determine impermanence as three types: the basis, the pervasive activity, and the cause. Among them, the physical body below the fourth dhyana is the feeling's

Reliance! Whatever lies between the cessation of perception and feeling is the complete cessation of perception and feeling. Whatever mind, desire, and aspiration there are from the peak of existence downwards, these are the cause of feeling in the future, because all these dharmas are impermanent as they arise dependently. Thus, he properly examines all the realms free from desire. This is the great worldly discipline. The first two are disciplines gathered by the power of individual examination. The latter is gathered by the power of meditation. He is thus diligent and endowed with the power of knowledge. By realizing the truth, seeing the manifestation of self-grasping and what belongs to self, he abandons all the afflictions to be abandoned and attains the discipline of a learner. By meditating on that discipline of a learner, he abandons the afflictions to be abandoned by meditation, which is preceded by the pride of "I am," and attains the discipline of a non-learner. Above that, there is no other discipline that is more excellent, more superior, and more wonderful. A monk who has entered this doctrine and has not restrained his senses is like this: in the next life, he will surely suffer from this suffering. Just as a leper enters a reed thicket, so too, one who has not restrained his senses is bound by objects that become like reed leaves, and in the next life, he is possessed by subtle suffering of rebirth, and his body is cut apart, but he does not understand, and thus he will suffer more in the next life. He is attached and clings to it, and he commits offenses, and because of this, even if he dwells in a monastery, he is afflicted by painful thoughts arising from regret and remorse, like grass, kusha grass, and thorns piercing his feet, and thus he cannot come or go fearlessly into the sangha. Even if he comes into the sangha, the wise, who practice like Brahma, will discuss his faults and their root, and he will have a hidden mind.
