It merely becomes a cause for birth. For example, taking something with the hand is like the action of taking, which is merely a cause of the karma thrown by the effort of the mind's instigation. This should be understood in the same way here. If a monk dwells in a remote dwelling and abides in solitude, and if he brings to mind the appearance of a coarse object and a place of tumultuous conceptual proliferation, then he is in harmony with the retinue of Mara. Therefore, the monk, with the nine modes of abiding the mind, having gathered the mind from the conceptual proliferation that is in accordance with all objects, does not open the occasion for the arising of even a single conceptual proliferation that, relying on those objects, would become an object to be consumed. Therefore, those objects will not penetrate the dwelling and will turn back. At that time, he does not rely on the conceptual proliferation of desire for things that will become objects of attachment, nor does he harm others with the conceptual proliferation of malice and injury. In this life, he will also attain nirvana. Having attained nirvana, he will not fight and argue with others, for fighting and arguing is to slander the excellent Dharma and Discipline. Thus, he does not even conceptualize the conceptual proliferations that arise from ignorance, like those non-Buddhist heretics. O monk, if one abides in the six sense-spheres of contact in this life, which are the fruit of the cause of suffering that will cause rebirth in the future, as if destroyed by the six objects, and if one practices celibacy desiring only to be reborn in the future, then at that time, the cause of suffering that will cause rebirth in the future will be even more destroyed by desire, because it will obstruct the attainment of nirvana in this life, and there is no certainty of obtaining leisure and endowments in the future. Therefore, the desire to be reborn should be understood as a subtle and extremely subtle bond. Why is that? Because in the palaces of the gods of the Thirty-Three, there are gods or any gods who are bound by being imprisoned in a prison. Their nature is this: having been freed from bondage, they dwell playing with the qualities of celestial desire until the thought of when to escape has not arisen.

As soon as the mind of escaping (samsara) arises, one will also fall away from the merits of desire, and one will see oneself bound by bondage. Those (desires) After the arising of the mind of aspiration, that bondage is subtle from the perspective of the fineness of time, but not from the perspective of the fineness that is difficult to perceive, because once bound, one will realize that one is bound. Bhikshus, similarly, as soon as the mind of aspiring to be reborn (in samsara) arises, one will also be bound, and even if bound, one will not realize that one is bound. Therefore, that bondage is difficult to perceive even from the perspective of the fineness of time, and from the perspective of extreme fineness, it should also be recognized as extremely fine. Bhikshus, one who engages in guarding the senses should also recognize guarding, and should also recognize non-guarding. One should also recognize the small, medium, and large guarding of the world. One should also recognize the guarding of those in training and those beyond training. So, what is guarding? For example, here, some people, when their minds are completely afflicted by objects that cause attachment, do not accept them, and they truly ascertain them, completely cut them off, and also abandon what has already arisen. What is non-guarding? For example, here, some monks, like farmers, rely on a superior person and rely on proper attention, thereby in the field of correct objects, some sprouts of virtuous roots will arise, but that is also a nature that is mainly based on desire. They are not accustomed to antidotes, and they do not have strong shame and embarrassment. Once coarse objects appear manifestly, now strong desire, as well as not being accustomed to antidotes, and small shame and embarrassment, will accept the arising of the entanglement of desire, and they will not protect their minds from the entanglement of desire. Therefore, that mind that corresponds to improper attention, like a cow that devours crops, enters the field of objects, thereby making the sprouts of virtuous roots unlovely, this is non-guarding. Furthermore, here, some people only quickly pay attention, thereby abandoning objects.
