How should it be done? By exerting diligence in four ways, if one exerts diligence properly, one will quickly exhaust defilements. What are the four? For example, without becoming weary in body or agitated in mind due to excessive diligence, one should understand moderation; and without wasting time due to excessive laxity, this is the first way. One should not be self-righteous, thinking, "I am diligent, but others are not," this is the second way. The fruit of properly exerting diligence is having a special realization of worldly contact and possessing mindfulness without attachment; this is the third way. For example, in order to ensure that one does not regress in the future, one should properly maintain the sign of balanced diligence; this is the fourth way. Thus, relying on proper diligence, eventually, an Arhat, having exhausted defilements, acts like the Teacher or Brahma. One who wishes to declare their own liberation in the presence of the wise should rely on faith in six places, for example, by correctly declaring Arhatship through the three trainings and the five types of individuals. What are the six places of faith? They are faith in renunciation, faith in harmlessness, faith in solitude, faith in the exhaustion of craving, faith in the exhaustion of grasping, and faith in a mind without forgetfulness. What are the three trainings? They are the training in higher morality, the training in higher mind, and the training in higher wisdom. What are the five types of individuals? An ordinary householder who relies solely on faith and has faith in renunciation, but does not renounce because their mind is bound by worldly concerns, this is the first type of individual. An ordinary individual who relies on the precepts of renunciation and engages in not harming sentient beings with body, speech, and mind, this is the second type of individual. One who has abandoned craving for gain and respect, and is free from desire and attachment to this life, this is the third type of individual. The four who have attained learning are the fourth type of individual. The Arhat who is beyond learning is the fifth type of individual. Among these, faith in the first and second places should be understood as relying on the first training.

The devotion to the third is based on the second training. Others, the devotions to the latter three places, should be understood as relying on the third training. Among them, what wisdom abandons the afflictions, and what abandons the afflictions, is the mind without forgetfulness. Moreover, since the cause of being born into existence has been abandoned, craving is exhausted. For this life, since the afflictions of the object have been abandoned, clinging is exhausted. Among them, the faith and renunciation of the first person are not entirely certain, because for the latter, they will completely separate from everything and have the potential to change. The second, namely devotion to harmlessness, is also the same. The third, namely devotion to solitude, is also the same. Devotion to the six places of learning, although for the latter there is no possibility of separation and change, but the samadhi, mindfulness, and wisdom of the one born in the realm of the noble ones have not been well cultivated and fully matured, and greed, hatred, and delusion have not been completely abandoned, so they are weak like young children. Because his wisdom is weak and he has not abandoned greed, etc., he becomes forgetful a few times out of a hundred, and when he encounters coarse objects, the liberation of the learner's mind and the liberation of wisdom are suppressed, thereby generating afflictions. Therefore, that person is also deficient in that limb because of having affairs. Whoever abides in the six abodes of an Arhat, because of extremely diligent cultivation of the path, will not become a cause of change for the latter, let alone separation? Since greed, hatred, and delusion have been completely abandoned, the wisdom of exhaustion and non-arising has been attained, and devotion to the exhaustion of craving and clinging is also completely fulfilled. Moreover, his wisdom is also fully equipped because he constantly abides in the six things to be done, so there is not even forgetfulness like that of a learner even a few times out of a hundred. Therefore, an Arhat is the devotion to the six places, which is truly complete, extremely pure, and possessed, and not others. Therefore, do not praise me with these terms, nor exhaust your wisdom.
