There are two types: external emptiness and internal emptiness. Among these, external emptiness generally refers to transcending the perception of the five forms associated with the five objects of desire, thereby manifesting a state of separation from attachment to desire. Internal emptiness refers to abandoning the pride of "I" towards internal actions and manifesting its state. So, what is the emptiness that should be cultivated? It should also be understood that there are two types: seeing internal and external objects as selfless, and seeing them as impermanent. Among these, the basis for these four types of emptiness should also be understood as fourfold. The basis for external emptiness is the joy and bliss that arise from solitude through the gate of meditative stabilization where the mind abides internally, moistening the body, and the complete understanding of the pride of "I." The basis for internal emptiness is seeing internal and external phenomena as selfless. The basis for seeing selflessness is seeing those very things as impermanent. The basis for seeing impermanence is hearing the sacred Dharma and applying proper attention. Among these, a monk who strives to be free from attachment to desire should, relying on the attention of investigation, focus on the repulsive signs associated with desire. Because he has not manifested the path and external emptiness, has not cultivated well, and is focused on the teachings, his mind does not engage in external emptiness with joy. He sees the mind scattering there in the manner of "I," so he focuses on internal emptiness, thinking it is peaceful. Although he has abandoned the pride of "I," his mind does not engage in it because he has not cultivated the path well. Therefore, he cultivates seeing internal and external actions as selfless. Because he has not cultivated seeing selflessness well, his mind does not engage in it. Therefore, by seeing internal and external things as impermanent, he cultivates an unwavering mind. By seeing actions as impermanent, he will not waver in any way. Therefore, seeing impermanence is called the unwavering realm. Because his mind does not incline towards these states, he uses correct wisdom.

Having realized, focusing the mind on unpleasantness, or focusing on loving-kindness, or focusing on the in-and-out flow of breath, or focusing on the impermanence of all conditioned things, through the cause of repeatedly engaging in samadhi, one will become capable. Then, gradually, one will enter into all things. The emptiness to be directly realized will also become completely perfect. Through the cause of its complete perfection, the mind will become completely liberated from all the bonds that are in accordance with the lower and higher divisions. The emptiness to be meditated upon will also become completely perfect. Through the cause of its becoming completely perfect, one will be endowed with the dharmas such as the non-learning correct view. As long as one does not enter, that is the state of an ordinary being. When one enters, that is the state of a learner. When meditation becomes completely perfect, that is the state of a non-learner. Having entered into the complete perfection of meditation, due to the movement of the mind, one contemplates virtuous thoughts. In that, one also knows measure and speaks words that are not afflicted. One walks in a correct walking place. One sits correctly on a seat, and in all things, one knows measure. Thus, this is the cause of this, and the going is pure. Pure abiding is the former. In the intervals, also, by applying mindfulness to conduct, one individually examines the pervasive activity of afflictions and disciplines the mind. These are the white dharmas that are definitely one. Being endowed with them, one is not overwhelmed by the maras and opponents, nor is one robbed by the four kinds of sinful, unwholesome dharmas, nor is one completely afflicted by the nature of being born again in existence, and the complete torment of body and mind in this life, and the nature of the cause of bad destinies, and the nature of the cause of suffering such as birth. Speech is of two kinds: following after the mere liking of sound, and following after diligently practicing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma. Of these, the former is receiving the teachings of the Dharma, and showing, and universally asking, and completely asking, and holding.
