If one enters in those ways, one enters in a way that is completely mastered through intense practice, pure, and without fault, and that is the difference. Therefore, one should understand that impermanence itself is the common characteristic of all conditioned phenomena. Suffering itself is the common characteristic of all contaminated phenomena. Relying on two kinds of knowing as they are, one should understand that these phenomena will appear as they are in their own nature. Even if non-Buddhists are able to enter into meditative equipoise, they are still surpassed by these practitioners of the Dharma, even if they have not entered into meditative equipoise, because of their knowledge, let alone those who have entered into meditative equipoise. What is the reason for this? Because even if non-Buddhists are able to enter into meditative equipoise, they are not able to truly know the six sense spheres in the way they are, through the five kinds of transformation, and they do not have the fortune to have a true mind free from attachment and liberation. Therefore, even if they are able to attain a state lower than the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, they are still very far from this Dharma discipline, like the distance between the sky and the earth. Even if they are able to endure all that is firm and difficult, they are still subject to complete decay, and like a cottonwood husk, they are unstable and cannot withstand the nourishment of afflictions. In this Dharma, even if one has not entered into meditative equipoise, merely having faith and hearing and being devoted to selflessness, one has the fortune to attain mental equipoise, and one is able to abandon and completely know the sense spheres, and has the fortune to have a mind free from attachment and liberation. Therefore, even if one merely abides in true devotion, one should understand that this Dharma is superior to not having eaten small onions. These five are the ways in which the six faculties become pacified in the six objects: because of seeing faults, one is extremely tamed; because of not engaging in objects that should not be engaged in, one is extremely withdrawn; because of extremely maintaining mindfulness towards objects that should be engaged in or those that suddenly appear, one is extremely guarded; because of abandoning all afflictions, one is extremely light.

And completely restrained, and practiced very much because the practice of the path is very complete. The Tathagata who knows the distinctions, declares that in two states he has completely transcended happiness and suffering, not because he does not see them directly. Regarding this, some think that the Shramana Gautama does not know or understand the world of exclusively certain happiness, suspects that happiness and suffering are mixed, and that he should completely transcend the edge of the world of mixed happiness and suffering, and that he teaches the Dharma to the Shravakas in order to transcend happiness and suffering. Their perception is a wrong perception, a wrong thought, and a wrong view, while the Tathagata knows the world of exclusively certain happiness and exclusively certain suffering, as well as the mixture of happiness and suffering, and also knows their impermanence. Therefore, in order to completely transcend all worlds, he declares transcendence from happiness and suffering. Pleasant objects should be understood in three ways: what should be sought is future desire. What should be constant is past desire that has already been enjoyed. What should be particularly attached to is the desire for external objects and the feeling of internal desire, which belong to the three times, and these should be understood in four ways: one is through the way of the future. Two is through the way of the past. Three is through the way of the present. These forms also belong to the forms of pleasantness, loveliness, joyfulness, and the nature of happiness. Similarly, unpleasantness and beauty, as well as joyfulness and pleasant forms, should also be understood appropriately. For those who strive for the samadhi of the two grounds, through two ways, in order to accomplish the three forms of the samadhi of the two times, they cut off various desires. In order to eliminate these obstacles, five antidotes should be practiced. Among them, past desires, that is, those that have already been enjoyed, also steal the mind through the way of thoughts when dwelling in solitude. The homeless one
