There are two types: asking about illness and asking about well-being. Among them, asking about illness is like this: Are you able to endure the fatigue of feeling? Are you staying because it is in accordance with life? Has the feeling of suffering become more intense? Has it become continuous? Have unpleasant gatherings of contact and things that are not in accordance with the mind entered the body? After entering, have they disappeared? This is asking about illness. Asking about well-being is like this: Is there anyone here who is not troubled by illness, so the harm is small? Because there is no external harm, and no harm caused by epidemic diseases, is there less fear? Do you sleep soundly at night, and is food digested smoothly, so actions are also easy? The distinctions of the various terms for life, strength, well-being, innocence, and the abiding of pleasant touch are like this: just as one should understand the moderation of food from the Hearer's Ground. It should be known that this question also belongs to four situations: belonging to internal harm, belonging to external harm, belonging to dwelling at night, and belonging to dwelling during the day. If an Arhat does not truly know that in this life, he does not approach or separate from food, speech, aggregates, realms, and sources, then he thinks that the Arhat does not approach. Thinking "the Arhat does not approach" is not right thinking. The Arhat does not not approach in this life, because he truly sees food, speech, aggregates, realms, and sources. Therefore, the Arhat truly does not approach after death, because the Arhat does not accept actions, nor does he approach. The Blessed One thought and said, "The Arhat does not accept actions, nor does he approach," which seems certain. It should be known that this is a distortion and perversion of the holy Dharma. Because the Brahmacharin or great Hearer has abandoned the distortion of the holy Dharma, he strives diligently relying on the power of two meanings, namely what those people themselves desire.

Thinking that it would be bad if one were to be born in a bad rebirth due to this cause of teaching others; and thinking that it would be bad if the teachings were to decline due to relying on pretending to be the true Dharma with a mind of fondness for the teachings. There are two causes for the arising of this pretending to be the true Dharma: one is not abandoning the view of the inner aggregates, and the other is relying on it and clinging to the individual who enters and exits. To abandon these two causes, there are two antidotes: one is to reveal the selflessness of all phenomena through the order of impermanence itself; and the other is to make the individual who enters and exits unobservable through the four transformations. For example, through the means of conditioned or unconditioned, the self of the Hearer, Solitary Buddha, and Buddha is called the Thus-Gone One. This is also designated in two ways: that which has a remainder of aggregates is designated as conditioned, and that which has no remainder of aggregates is designated as unconditioned. But in the ultimate sense, the conditioned cannot be designated by the conditioned, nor can the unconditioned be designated by the unconditioned. If six kinds of understanding arise through the teaching of the true Dharma, then one should know that the pretending to be the true Dharma has been abandoned. For example, understanding that the aggregates of the Arhat, which are included in the conditioned, are of the nature of destruction, and therefore are impermanent; understanding that this life is a place of sickness, old age, and suffering, and therefore is of the nature of suffering; and understanding cessation, abandonment, the realm of detachment, cessation in the realm of cessation, peace, coolness, and power. If, with such understanding, the thought of an Arhat with false pride does not arise, then how could one engage in elaborations of views about whether one goes or does not go near after death? One should know that there are two faults in not abandoning the view of the aggregates: one is that, like a murderer, clinging to the aggregates that cause suffering as self or belonging to self, these will cause him to suffer in samsara; and the other is that in this life also, it will take away the life of the supreme noble wisdom.
