One thinks, "May I have such a formation." In this way, one would also regret the causes of formations that lead to rebirth, and would not abandon those that have already arisen. Thus, there is a distinction among formations. The aspects of these are the eleven aspects that belong to formations, and should be understood as before. The cause of what arises now is as follows: it is form that arises from the cause of arising, relying on the four great elements, and due to the condition of contact, feelings and other mental events arise, and due to the cause of arising, name, and form, consciousness arises. The way to enter into this is to rely on the view of the perishable aggregate, and to have the pride of "I" towards formations, and whatever experiences the taste, and whatever is seen as self and belonging to self. The way to turn away from this is to not have the pride of "I" towards formations, and to see the faults, and to have renunciation, and whatever does not see self and belonging to self. The way to enter into this is to recognize that it belongs to the side of ignorance and craving. The antidote to this is the way to turn away. An unskilled Shravaka will transgress the teachings that are taught with two causes, and will fall into sinful views, or speak words, and will be confused about conventional truth, and will be confused about ultimate truth. Because of being so confused, they will completely transgress the way of conventional truth, and will completely transgress the way of ultimate truth, and will therefore think improperly about the entry of formations. If only the noble ones approve, then there are three aspects to what is taught. Ordinary people are not like that, they only hear some partial knowledge from others. For example, seeing that there is no self or belonging to self in formations, one teaches the nature as it is; and one teaches that even if one abandons what one relies on to generate the pride of "I", one has not completely abandoned everything; and one teaches how one acts even when the basis for entry no longer exists, but one has not abandoned the pride of "I". Among these, the pride of "I" arises towards formations.

There are two kinds: acting with manifest attachment, and acting with forgetfulness. Among them, acting with manifest attachment is abandoned by the noble ones, so they do not act. The second is acting through the door of latent tendencies. Even though the view of the aggregates of destruction has been abandoned, it is still practiced because the noble path has not been well cultivated. That is, in a state slightly related to the latent tendencies of the view of the aggregates of destruction, acting with forgetfulness, the pride of thinking "I am" performs the function of a basis. Therefore, even though it is abandoned, there is still acting. For the noble ones, even when attending to phenomena in terms of their own characteristics, the pride of thinking "I am" will not arise and be practiced, let alone in terms of general characteristics. Even when attending to phenomena in terms of imputation, if mindfulness is present, the pride of thinking "I am" will not arise and be practiced. If attending to imputation itself, if mindfulness is not present, the pride of thinking "I am" will arise and be practiced. For ordinary beings, even when attending to phenomena in terms of general characteristics, if the mind-stream is mixed with the pride of thinking "I am," what need is there to mention other times? For the mind-stream of the noble ones, the view of the aggregates of destruction is abandoned in terms of latent tendencies and pervasive calculation. In terms of being related to latent tendencies, it is not abandoned by the learners. The pride of thinking "I am" is not abandoned in terms of either latent tendencies or pervasive calculation. Among them, whatever thought of wanting "I am" arises, it should be known that it is pervasively calculated by pride. Why is that? Because, if one is forgotten and carried away by desire and the taste of meditative absorption, then in terms of thought, the pride of thinking "I am" is pervasively calculated and practiced. That is also because he has not abandoned it in terms of latent tendencies, nor has he fully understood it in terms of pervasive calculation, so he will become forgetful at that time. It is not prevented because even though it has been separated from pervasive calculation, it will still be practiced. It is not exhausted because its latent tendencies have not been completely destroyed. For those who practice pure conduct, the question of whether those who practice pure conduct should be universally delighted is...
