Therefore, the two, clinging to views and the pride of "I am," are called "great." Craving is called "smoke." Why is that? Because regarding conditioned phenomena, being obscured by the two, clinging to views and the pride of "I am," not understanding that the nature of conditioned phenomena is inferior, therefore, among gods and humans, they desire the body and enjoyment to be great. Therefore, it is called "great." Like smoke, it does not well abide in the ordinary mind, but rather disturbs it, therefore it is called "smoke." In summary: without fault and without desire, in answering questions there is no error, characteristic and interval, wonder and the cause of destruction, completely determined by defilements, neither of the two is ultimate. These two, even if they have faith, do not possess conduct that accords with faith. Which two? The faithful householder who attains nirvana, and those who have faith in the impermanence of conditioned phenomena, but abide without regarding conditioned phenomena as faults, and because they do not understand renunciation, they completely indulge in enjoyment. The faithful renunciate who has left home and gone forth from home to homelessness, even if they have faith, does not abide with a strong desire to attain nirvana, nor do they rely on desire to constantly engage in cultivating virtuous dharmas in order to attain nirvana in this very life. The opposite of this should be understood as the two kinds of conduct that accord with faith. These two, for those who are faithful in being skilled and clear in this Dharma, or in answering questions posed by non-Buddhists, there is no error. For example, relying on the Middle Way, starting from the arising and ceasing of conditioned phenomena, not clinging to sentient beings, nor denying the truth of the existence of things, but merely showing the momentary arising and ceasing of conditioned phenomena, that is without error in answering questions. Saying that sentient beings have arising and ceasing, this is the extreme of clinging, that is, one extreme. Saying that nothing arises or ceases, this is the extreme of denial, that is, the second extreme. Saying that there is only the arising or ceasing of conditioned phenomena, this is the Middle Way, which is liberated from the two extremes.

Yes. Therefore, answering with that is the best of answers, it is praised by the Thus-Gone One. Or, if asked: For what reason does one practice brahmacharya in the presence of the ascetic Gautama? As before, answering with the Middle Way that abandons the two extremes of imputation and defamation is an answer without error. 'One practices in order to purify all sentient beings from their afflictions' - this is one extreme. 'For what purpose does one not practice?' - this is the second extreme. 'One practices in order to be disgusted with conditioned phenomena, in order to be free from desire, and in order to cease' - this is the Middle Way. Therefore, answering with that is without error and is excellent. It should be known that it is praised by the Thus-Gone One. These two are conditioned and unconditioned phenomena. Among them, the impermanence of conditioned phenomena can be known by the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena, namely, arising, ceasing, and changing from abiding. Those three characteristics can also be known by relying on the two continuities of conditioned phenomena, namely, the continuity that passes from one lifetime to another, and the continuity that passes from one moment to another. Among them, in the earliest continuity, the birth that occurs in this and that class of sentient beings is arising. Finally, death is ceasing. Between the beginning and the end, in the states of youth and so on, is changing from abiding, because it abides for as long as the duration of life. Because there is a difference in each later state, it is change. Then, in the latest continuity, the arising of each conditioned phenomenon in each moment is arising. Not remaining beyond that moment of arising is ceasing. Remaining only for the moment of arising is abiding. Change is of two types: change of otherness and change into otherness. Among them, change of otherness is the destruction of conditioned phenomena in a similar continuity. Change into otherness is a dissimilar continuity.
