Earth-bird, this should be understood and recognized through the earliest knowledge. The latter should be seen and recognized through the most extremely pure. These Dharma practitioners and the teachers and disciples of the outsiders should be recognized as superior and inferior in five ways, namely: abiding, completely accomplishing the assembly, distinctly determining related speech, correctly showing the establishment of the path, and diligently accomplishing it. Among them, from this, the teachers of the outsiders, together with their disciples, constantly and continuously dwell in a mixed manner, while these Dharma practitioners strive to establish themselves correctly within at all times, and this is the first point of superiority and inferiority. Furthermore, the teachers of the outsiders have their own monastic community with a fixed number of ordained disciples, and small groups of lay disciples. Among all of them, because they are revered as teachers, they are called teachers of the community, and because people with childish natures hope to have qualities, they are revered as extremely virtuous. The Tathagata should be recognized as the opposite of this, because he is also the teacher of the world with gods, so he is revered as a teacher. Furthermore, the teachers of the outsiders engage with their respective disciples in determining related speech, spending their time with mutually inconsistent and unrelated speech, as well as speech that confuses and does not purify knowledge, while these Dharma practitioners should be recognized as the opposite of this. Furthermore, the teachers of the outsiders establish and show the path to their disciples through causelessness or inconsistent causes, being disturbed in mind by the great demon who hears evil Dharma, those who are in accordance with evil thoughts and non-reasoned intentions disturb the minds of others, and are those who have the intention of seeking the faults of others. Therefore, if those people are asked by others, they will hastily speak words that have not been thought through, because they themselves also hold to causelessness or inconsistent causes, and have become completely afflicted, therefore

knowing. Not knowing the cause of all the afflictions of oneself and others as they truly are, therefore, is ignorance. Being completely purified is being completely abandoned, therefore, it is unclear. Not being skilled in the cause of complete purification, therefore, it is unskilled. Not knowing how much to speak, how to speak, and where to speak as they truly are, therefore, it is not knowing measure and not knowing the occasion. The opposite of this, know that these are the followers of the Dharma. Furthermore, the disciples of the teachers of the outsiders, because they say without degeneration and without inversion, therefore, they do not slander the teachers. Because they say without remainder and without addition, therefore, they do not contradict. Because the meaning is consistent, therefore, they speak as taught. Because the words are consistent, therefore, they also speak according to the Dharma. Because it is consistent with the Dharma, therefore, in order to speak those aspects that conform to their wishes, they answer with the Dharma that conforms to the Dharma. Even if they are cautious, it should be known that they only deceive others in order to obtain their own benefit by diligently pursuing the Dharma that conforms to the Dharma. What more to say about those who are not cautious? Those people will therefore deceive themselves, and will also be refuted by other debaters, and will be reproached together with the wrong view of the Dharma. The opposite of this, know that these are the followers of the Dharma. Know that this is the fifth superiority and inferiority. Among them, know that actions are painful in four ways, but not necessarily completely afflicted, and happy in four ways, but not necessarily completely purified. Those four ways should also be understood on three bases, namely: place of birth, feeling, and time. Among them, happiness is of the third dhyana. Related to happiness are humans, that is, those who have both. Possessing happiness and joy are of the first and second dhyanas. Only not exceeding happiness is up to the fourth dhyana. Among them, suffering is of animals and hungry ghosts. Related to suffering are humans.
