It is the cause that makes the activities manifest and accomplished, and at such times, there are latent afflictions that have not been abandoned. In order to abandon the three existing aspects there, namely, not looking, not showing joy, and not having special attachment, one strives in three ways to realize the realm of abandonment, detachment, and cessation. The Compendium of Topics from the Yogācārabhūmi, Volume Five. These two are the seeing of no-self without manifest pride in activities. What are the two? They are the not utterly pure and the utterly pure. What is the not utterly pure? It is like this: some people dwell in solitude, relying on the patience of the impermanence of activities, and with worldly wisdom, they believe in no-self. Through the cause of this belief, from the forms cognized by the eye to the dharmas cognized by the mind, they grasp at the notion of self and see the abandonment through the practice of the signs of grasping at self. The four knots gathered by outsiders are also similar to this: inferior desire, inferior hatred, and inferior ignorance. Among them, the knot of miserliness of the body gathers inferior desire, the knot of harmful intent gathers inferior hatred, and the other two gather inferior ignorance. The meaning of "inferior" should be understood as "bad." This is knowing the no-self without manifest pride, because it is in accordance with proper attention and is the ground of meditative stabilization. However, it is not utterly pure due to two causes: when one engages in the roots of virtue that are in accordance with the aspect of discernment, the coarse pride of "I am" turns into the subtle thought of "I am," and attention arises alternately. Therefore, one thinks like this: "I am meditating on emptiness, I have obtained it, I have emptiness, I am superior because of this emptiness." All of this is the same as the signless nature of emptiness as it is, and also the same as nothingness.

Those who desire the cause of all enjoyment, or those who have attachment to the aggregates of decay, and those who have attachment to consciousness, because they do not fully understand these, desire arises. Transformed by attachment to the aggregates of decay, from thorough contemplation to not entering Nirvana, and the mind also turns back, just as mentioned before. Moreover, this is to be fully understood through eight aspects. Once it is fully understood, one is freed from its faults, therefore seeing selflessness, extremely pure, and without manifest pride, one should understand it thus. Therefore, having perished, because it is the nature of perishing, it is impermanent. Truly accomplished from karma and afflictions, therefore it is conditioned. Truly accomplished from previous aspirations, therefore it is contemplated. Truly accomplished from one's own seed and present external conditions, therefore it is dependent arising. From the perspective of the future, because it is the nature of aging, it is the nature of decay. Because it is the nature of death, it is the nature of disappearance. Before aging and death, it is also a vessel for various harms such as diseases, therefore it is the nature of change. Relying on the antidote, it can be made free from desire, and it can be stopped, therefore this life is the nature of being free from desire, and it is the nature of cessation. In short, these are the observations of faults belonging to the three times. Apart from the nature of being free from desire and cessation, it should be understood in other ways. Through these two ways, it should be understood as observing renunciation. Fully understanding consciousness through these two ways of faults and renunciation is complete understanding. Therefore, the selflessness of all dharmas is only the seal of the Dharma. Moreover, this is what the teacher, the Dharma King, the unsurpassed one, has said, without defilement in the continuum of all noble ones, rejoicing in obtaining all the wealth of the noble ones. Therefore, oneself will correctly pass through the great abyss of samsara and the long path through ease and happiness. Because of happiness, this is the seal of the Dharma that transcends it.
