It should be understood as such. The seven requisites of Samadhi are as follows: It should be understood as arising from the ground of equanimity. Among them, the path of right view and so on is called Dharma because it abides in wisdom. It is called discipline because it subdues afflictions. It is called noble because it is far from sinful dharmas and is relied upon by the noble ones. It is called virtuous because it leads to happy realms. It should be relied upon because it will lead to Nirvana. It should be known as good because it is praised by the noble ones. The opposite of this is the path of wrong view and so on, which is called black because it is in accordance with the dark side of ignorance. It is called harmful because it will lead to evil realms. It is called evil because it is unwholesome. It is called with faults because it causes destruction and hatred in this life. It should be completely abandoned because it is abandoned and condemned by the noble ones. Through the conduct of a true renunciate, the eightfold noble path is distinguished by the meaning of the conduct of a renunciate. For this meaning, the symbolic explanation of the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya is made, and the conduct of a renunciate is correctly accepted. It is called correct because it will never be destroyed. The symbolic explanation is not like that. Whoever possesses the correct conduct of a renunciate should also be regarded as a correct renunciate. This is also thoroughly sought for the purpose of completely abandoning all afflictions such as desire, hatred, and delusion. Therefore, it is called the meaning of the conduct of a renunciate. The meaning of the conduct of a renunciate should also be understood as twofold: a general comprehensive distinction, and a distinction related to actions, a distinction without actions, a distinction of entering, and a difference of abiding in the fruition. If all these are summarized, there are four: the conduct of a renunciate, the renunciate, the meaning of the conduct of a renunciate, and the fruit of the renunciate. The summary is: obstacles and afflictions close to them, as well as conceptual thoughts and fruition are above. The subtle parts and the fatigue of the body, as well as learning, place, and attention should be known. Overpowering is the last. Breathing and contemplating the arising of mindfulness are ten kinds.

There are six. The detailed explanation is as follows: It should be understood as it appears in the Śrāvakabhūmi. For a yogi who diligently practices mindfulness of breathing in and out, it should be known that there are five kinds of things that act as obstacles. These are: the mind wandering externally; taking in breath; difficulty in entering into arising; the all-encompassing entanglement of agitation; and the all-encompassing entanglement of drowsiness and sleep; and dwelling mixed with householders and renunciates. It should be known that these obstruct the mind that has not attained samadhi from attaining samadhi, and obstruct the mind that has attained samadhi from repeatedly practicing. Because of the arising of physical drowsiness and mental weakness, which become proximate afflictions contrary to calm abiding, the body of one who practices mindfulness of breathing in and out becomes extremely pliable, and one becomes separated from the bad states of the body connected with drowsiness. The proximate afflictions that are in accordance with insight are as follows: bad thoughts such as thoughts of desire; bad intentions such as intentions of desire; and when the thoughts that arise in accordance with the part of ignorance become proximate afflictions, practicing mindfulness of breathing in and out will pacify those thoughts and investigations, and by counteracting the intentions that are in accordance with the part of ignorance, one will perfect the practice of intentions that are in accordance with the part of knowledge, without being mixed up. If a yogi diligently practices mindfulness of breathing in and out, then he will abandon the thoughts and investigations that focus on past actions, because these thoughts and investigations arise occasionally and obstruct samadhi. Thoughts and investigations that focus on future actions will be pacified. Thoughts and investigations that focus on present actions will be calmed. In short, it should be known that because of abandoning the six kinds of pervasive actions, one can establish the two benefits of the result, as well as the four and seven benefits, just as it appears in the sutras. What are the six? They are: the two that are in accordance with the lower part and the two that are in accordance with the upper part; and the two that are to be abandoned by seeing and meditation; and the manifest
