I abide in the absence of characteristics, and to accomplish the meaning of abiding without labor, equanimity is like a precious minister. Compendium of Matters from the Yogācārabhūmi, Volume Twenty-Two. Like a yogi king who has obtained the great garment of the seven limbs of enlightenment, he abides by abiding in the limbs of enlightenment in three parts. This is to say: in accordance with the aspect of calm abiding, in accordance with the aspect of insight, and both of them. These are the three parts like its morning, the midday sun, and leftovers. In that, the first part abides with four limbs of enlightenment. The second also abides with four. The third abides with all seven. The yogi never abides with only one limb of enlightenment. Those seven limbs of enlightenment are also called without that, and non-competitive, and non-harmful, because they do not follow the anger of other non-Buddhists, and because they do not abide in a hostile manner, and because they enter with the intention of benefiting others, and because they are not associated with all afflictions. When that yogi realizes them, and as long as he abides having realized them, and when they arise and cease, he knows all of them exactly as they are. Thus, he who abides with mindfulness abides without fault, and without tasting, and without mental distraction. The cultivation of the limbs of enlightenment associated with twenty-one perceptions should be understood in brief as two types: the meaning of being associated with equality, and the meaning of being associated immediately with that. From being associated with the perception of impermanence, etc., up to being associated with the perception of death, is the meaning of being associated with equality. From being associated with the perception of ugliness, etc., up to being associated with the perception of individually examining emptiness, is the meaning of being associated immediately with that. Being associated with love, etc., should also be understood as being associated with that. Confusion about formations, namely: confusion about the formations that have arisen in the past, future, and present, and laziness, and negligence, and the view of the perishable collection.

Even if views are abandoned, due to being connected with habitual tendencies, arrogance of 'I' arises universally, along with craving for flavors and attachment to desires for various worldly things. Furthermore, there are residual habitual tendencies of afflictions, as well as thoughts of gain, thoughts of livelihood, craving for desires, craving for existence, and four types of desire-attachment related to evil thoughts, namely attachment to color, shape, touch, and reverence. These are faults of a yogi, as they cause the mind to enter a wrong path. As antidotes to these, one should meditate on the limbs of enlightenment appropriately, endowed with twenty-one kinds of mindfulness. Among them, as a basic antidote, one should meditate on the mindfulness of the aspect of wishlessness. Starting from the mindfulness of impermanence, up to the mindfulness of being utterly displeased with all the world, one should meditate. As an antidote to 'one,' it is the mindfulness of the aspect of emptiness. For suffering, it is the mindfulness of selflessness. In order to abandon the residual habitual tendencies of afflictions, it is the mindfulness of signlessness regarding the three realms. As antidotes to thoughts of gain and craving for desires, it is the mindfulness of the faults of desires. As antidotes to thoughts of livelihood and craving for existence, it is the mindfulness of death. As antidotes to the four types of desire-attachment related to evil thoughts, starting from the mindfulness of ugliness, up to the mindfulness of individually examining emptiness, one should meditate. All those from the mindfulness of complete decomposition, etc., up to the mindfulness of individually examining emptiness, should be understood as the mindfulness of ugliness. Among them, those from complete decomposition, etc., up to the mindfulness of swelling, are the antidotes to attachment to color. The mindfulness of being eaten, being bloodied, and being scattered are the antidotes to attachment to shape. The mindfulness of bones and skeletons is the antidote to attachment to touch. The mindfulness of individually examining the empty shell filled with consciousness is the antidote to attachment to reverence. For example, 'loving-kindness being universally present becomes the supreme virtue,' and so forth, like this, the place of equipoise.
