It should be known. The rest is as before. There are five stages in cultivating the four mindfulnesses, which should be understood as: arising from faith, guarding the precepts, guarding the sense faculties, dwelling in solitude, and purifying obscurations. Laypeople who cultivate the four mindfulnesses, although they have faith and purify obscurations, should know that their grounds for training are deficient and incomplete. A monk who possesses precepts and lives righteously with three causes is perfect, it should be known. What are the three? They are: perfect conduct, perfect acceptance, and perfect enjoyment. Among these, perfect conduct is from starting with trade, up to abandoning killing, dying, cutting, and engaging in beating. Perfect acceptance is from accepting elephants, horses, and so on, up to abandoning accepting raw rice. Perfect enjoyment is being content with just enough clothes to cover the body and just enough food to fill the stomach, and abandoning untimely food. The four dharmas, such as the body, are like a crossroads on the path. Improperly attending to these is like leaving the sprouts of rice and barley unsoaked. Properly attending to these should be known as like properly placing the sprouts of rice and barley. The place where the desire realm is not equally established is like the skin. The place where the form and formless realms are equally established is like the flesh. In the three realms of ignorance, that which transforms into the exhaustion of the three outflows is like blood. In two ways, those who are connected with various kinds of sinful and unwholesome dharmas, such as attachment, which were previously taught, do not have the opportunity to cultivate the four mindfulnesses; however, it is not the case that anyone who is connected does not have the opportunity at all. What are the two? They are: both having the entanglements of attachment and so on, and not regarding those entanglements as faults. When (afflictions) manifest, the mind is completely defiled by afflictions, so there is no opportunity to cultivate; when (afflictions) are separated, they are treated with a welcoming attitude, and they are not regarded as faults.

The mind will be distracted and robbed by the dharmas of places such as falling back, and will be disturbed by thoughts. Therefore, there is no opportunity for cultivation. It is not like that. If one does not accept it in any way, there is no opportunity. Then, no matter who it is, there will be no opportunity to cultivate the four mindfulnesses. In short, joy and strength cultivate samadhi, the types are supernatural powers, not the last. The establishment of the four right abandonments is like this, just as it is said in the Hearer's Ground. Joy refers to the five sentences. So what is joy? Just like before, it arises from initiating diligence, and as a leaky vessel, and the imbalance of elements, and the harsh words of others, and accepting the suffering arising from harm, because of these reasons, not retreating from cultivating the right abandonment is called joy. The establishment of the four supernatural feet is explained in detail as follows, and should be understood as it is said in the Hearer's Ground. In short, in order to keep the mind in equilibrium, the four supernatural feet are established with four powers. What are the four? That is, the power of pure aspiration, the power of diligence, the power of mental joy, and the power of wisdom. Among them, with the first power, the desire for samadhi arises, and one strives and works hard to obtain it. With the second power, the mind is made to dwell only in the beginning, and it is made to dwell equally. With the third power, the mind is not allowed to be distracted from dwelling and dwelling equally in an outward manner. With the fourth power, one knows and understands the afflictions that are not in harmony with samadhi, whether they are abandoned or not, and one knows and realizes the signs of dwelling in samadhi and being in accordance with it. Similarly, one also knows the signs of calm abiding and so on, as well as the near afflictions of calm abiding and insight, and the antidotes to the near afflictions, as they really are. Wanting samadhi, doing samadhi in samadhi, is only that, and there is nothing higher than this. There is nothing more excellent than this.
