Those who wish to practice yoga should thus grasp the characteristics of inner calm abiding by focusing their minds on it. How should I direct my mind, and how should I direct my mind so that it rests in calm abiding? If the mind rests in calm abiding, the dullness and languor of body and mind will become obstacles to calm abiding. How should I direct my mind so that it does not become an obstacle? One should grasp the characteristics in this way. If that monk does not grasp the characteristics of his own mind in this way, and knows that his mind is afflicted by defilements, then he should grasp the characteristics of external, pleasing objects. Therefore, for a while, he will abandon those defilements that are arising and manifest. However, whenever he gathers his mind as before, he will again be afflicted by the same defilements and will not be able to deal with them equally. This is because he did not previously grasp the characteristics of his own mind and did not remove the latent tendencies. Therefore, he will be defeated and destroyed by that cause and that defilement, and he will also be afflicted by unhappiness because he has not obtained the desired goal. Even after a very long time, he will not be able to attain the calm abiding of his inner mind. Because of not relying on calm abiding, he will also not be able to attain the supreme mindfulness and awareness that arise from the power of previously perfected insight. Because of not attaining the calm abiding of his inner mind, he will not be able to attain the four abodes of happiness in this life that arise from the superior mind. Because of not attaining supreme mindfulness and awareness, he will not be able to attain the previously unattained attainments and the unsurpassed bliss of nirvana. Conversely, one should know that through the white side, he will attain the previously unattained attainments up to the unsurpassed bliss of nirvana. This is the yoga practice like a cook. Like Jowo (尊者), it is the mind focused on calm abiding. Like seasoning, it is grasping at characteristics. Like a large amount of food and clothing, one should know that it is the calm abiding of the inner mind, and so on. From the dark side, one should know that it is a child. From the bright side, one should know that it is a wise person.

O! A monk who diligently cultivates the four mindfulnesses, due to the manifestation of a vast object of attachment, or having obtained permission alone, due to negligence, relying on improper attention, generates a strong entanglement of desire. He dwells in that entanglement of desire with shame, thinking of himself as being imprisoned, and strives hard to break free. Having done so, he will also be liberated from that entanglement of desire. Having been liberated, he will feel content, and thereafter he will become very remorseful. Having obtained remorse, he is then plowed by the great plow of the thought of impermanence, and when actions destroy all things like fragments, he realizes the nature of truth as it is, and places his mind on Nirvana. Due to the practice of contemplation, he considers that vast object as suffering, and because he has not abandoned the habitual tendencies of desire, the entanglement of desire suddenly arises and manifests. He sees it as a fault, and in order to abandon that entanglement together with its habitual tendencies, he enters into the signless samadhi, and in this way he abandons the remaining part. He rises from that samadhi, and also comprehends what has been abandoned, and experiences the joy and happiness of liberation, and he truly sees that he possesses the power of great wisdom, and that the power of the demons is small. Cultivating the four mindfulnesses accomplishes the ultimate and most excellent final result, therefore it should be known that its fruit is vast. Because it will accomplish the most excellent benefit of supreme happiness, therefore it should be known that its benefit is great. Summary: Teacher, snow mountain, establishing, Diligence, place, and complete purity, Sequence, discipline, perfectly complete, Possessing order is not inferior. The non-Buddhist appears as a teacher among his own disciples, desiring gain and respect, (thinking) if a son of good family wishes to benefit me, and there meets with the conditions and ordains, he (will) say this:
