The four mindfulnesses are created by two causes, and are excellently created: in order to truly know the proper way of attending, and to truly know the correct samadhi. After that, it culminates in truly knowing the correct wisdom. Therefore, a monk is able to obtain the three antidotes as desired, effortlessly, and without difficulty, namely: the perception of impermanence, loving-kindness, and the absence of signs. Through these three antidotes, according to the situation, as before, for the pleasing body and so on, generating the thought of disagreeableness, and not generating the thought of disagreeableness, and completely abandoning both, abiding in equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness. Therefore, it should be known that he has cultivated the four mindfulnesses. Summary: Tasting the flavor of roots and so on, the difference between before and after, clinging to signs and being completely entangled, the result is also the last. These three roots are the place of obstacles to the accumulation of virtue of the four mindfulnesses, therefore it should be known that they have been transformed into an accumulation of non-virtue. Which three? The root of misconduct, because in the future it will abide in the suffering of the lower realms; the root of thought, because in this life it will abide in suffering; and the root of the root, that is, the root of misconduct and the root of the root of thought, is called the root of the root. Among them, the three roots of non-virtue such as attachment are the roots of misconduct of the body and so on. The three perceptions such as desire are the roots of thought of desire and so on. The three realms such as desire should be known as the three roots such as attachment, and the root of the three roots such as the thought of desire. A monk who strives for mindfulness abides by cultivating the worldly path, from what is called being separated from desires, and extensively up to the absorption of the peak of existence. He becomes proficient in tasting its flavor, and is content with that, and no longer strives upwards in order to obtain what has not been obtained.

One who acts in this way should not be called a great person in the Vinaya of the Noble Ones. Why is that? Because his mind is not completely liberated. One who is the opposite of this should be known as a great person. Here, a bhikshu, dwelling in the contemplation of the body, etc., although he gathers his mind inward in nine ways, his mind is not liberated from the opposing factors of calm abiding, namely, the dullness and languor of body and mind. Because he is not liberated, dullness of body and languor of mind will arise even in a mind that is so clearly gathered. If he recognizes that the mind is extremely stable in the four mindfulnesses, and that the afflictions of proximity have arisen, he releases the mind from that inwardly gathered state and directs it to an object of external joy, such as the qualities of the Tathagata, etc. Because that object gives rise to great joy, he focuses his mind on it from the perspective of increasing and expanding attachment, making the mind dwell in equanimity, and he will also be liberated from the afflictions of proximity, the opposing factors of calm abiding. Then, recognizing that the mind is liberated from the afflictions of proximity, because he has attained the purpose for which he intentionally directed it outward, he gathers it inward again as before, and the afflictions of proximity will no longer cause him to approach affliction. After he has gathered it, even without intentionally directing it outward, he will truly know, as it is, "I am liberated," and he will be separated from the arising of suffering that accompanies the various conceptualizations of external objects, as well as exertion and effort. He will attain equanimity, dwell in bliss, and perfectly accomplish calm abiding. Therefore, from the four mindfulnesses, recognizing that the mind dwells extremely stably, and that the latter is superior to the former, one should know that that person previously practiced vipashyana, relied on vipashyana, and joined it with calm abiding. A bhikshu who diligently practices mindfulness, relying on vipashyana, joins it with calm abiding.
