I. Since desire is the cause of suffering in future lives, one should regard the feeling of pleasure as suffering. Manifest suffering, like an unextracted arrow, is of the nature of harm, so suffering should be regarded as an arrow. The state of having no feeling, which is neither suffering nor pleasure, is impermanent, and what is manifest is also of the nature of cessation, both of which are in accordance with connection. Therefore, what is neither suffering nor pleasure should be regarded as impermanent and of the nature of cessation. This is the correct way to view feelings, because whatever feeling it may be, it falls under the category of "this is suffering." From pleasure comes desire, from suffering comes hatred, and from neither suffering nor pleasure comes the increase of ignorance. This is the affliction arising from feelings. Abiding in all states such as pleasure, because one has not abandoned everything, the latent tendencies will prevail. However, the entanglements that arise from their respective objects, those entanglements, after them, remain in the continuum like a sleeping state associated with afflictions, and are therefore called latent tendencies. Therefore, practicing celibacy here is for the purpose of destroying latent tendencies, and not merely for the purpose of eliminating entanglements. A person who does not possess the power of individual analysis will become very weary when experiencing painful feelings, because he will experience the manifest suffering of body and mind, and will be associated with pleasure and neither suffering nor pleasure that have not been abandoned. Therefore, the pure feeling is called underground, and its depths cannot be reached. It should be known that one who possesses the power of individual analysis is the opposite of that. A mind that is not liberated from feelings will fully experience the feeling of suffering, just as a person struck by two arrows experiences two arrows. Desire, hatred, and delusion completely defile the mind.

Therefore, one will experience three kinds of feelings. One will also experience feelings accompanied by suffering such as birth. In this way, at that time, one will experience nearly afflicted feelings due to the three: the great suffering of this life, the afflictions of this life, and the realm of suffering in the next life. The opposite of this is to recognize that the mind is completely liberated. The difference between experiencing three kinds of feelings is not like that. Regarding this, feelings that arise from the body, vanish, disappear, and do not remain, that quickly pass away and do not remain due to a similar continuum at other times, those should be regarded as like dust in the wind. Those that remain slightly due to a similar continuum, but do not change in an instant, those should be regarded as like a sudden disaster that befalls a tree. Regarding this, the differences in those forms should be understood from the differences in nature, support, affliction, and purification. Regarding this, feelings accompanied by defilement are all worldly. What is without defilement is transcendent. What depends on confusion is the afflicted feeling arising from the five objects of desire. What depends on renunciation is the renunciation of the grounds of meditative stabilization and non-meditative stabilization, and the feeling that is possessed of all the merits arising from complete solitude. The feeling of suffering, because it is obvious to all beings, does not need to be proven. One should believe that two kinds of feelings are painful for two reasons, feelings that are neither painful nor pleasant, and the corresponding formations, because they are impermanent. Pleasant feelings, and the corresponding formations, because they are of the nature of change. Therefore, no matter what the feeling is, one should recognize that this is suffering here. In short, the pacification of feelings should be understood in three ways: by relying on the meditative stabilization of a higher ground, the feelings of a lower ground are pacified; pacified by temporarily not universally enjoying; and never in the future.
