Aging and birth. The cause of all defiled dharmas is twofold: that which arises from craving and that which arises from karma. Among these, that which arises from craving is as follows: the very nature of dependent origination that does not arise in accordance with the norm is existence (bhava), grasping (upādāna), craving (tṛṣṇā), and the aggregation of ignorance (avidyā), namely, the feeling that arises from contact and the aggregation of ignorance, namely, contact itself and the six sense spheres related to the realm of ignorance. Among these, that which arises from karma is the very nature of dependent origination that does not arise in accordance with the norm, namely, name and form, consciousness, and formations. Even if these are understood, if one does not understand them as they are with just the knowledge of the abiding of dharma, then when one realizes the truth, how could there be an opportunity to completely understand or, having completely understood, to transform from the ground of learning through the path of cultivation to a more excellent state? For the formations of dependent origination, the nature of dharma arising from the aggregation of intelligence, namely, contact, will lead to the realization of the nature of the four truths. What are the two? The feeling arising from the aggregation of intelligence, namely, contact, which is the nature of experiencing the object, and the wisdom arising from the aggregation of intelligence, namely, contact, which is the nature of thoroughly distinguishing the object. Among these, if each of the eleven limbs of existence is separately established as the four truths, then after establishing them, they will become forty-four bases. Among these, through the gate of feeling arising from the aggregation of intelligence, namely, contact, one should experience them as forty-four bases in that way. Through the gate of wisdom arising from the aggregation of intelligence, namely, contact, one should call those very forty-four bases the bases of knowledge. Among these, the final aging and death are merely the result. The initial ignorance is merely the cause. The remainder are both cause and result. Furthermore, one should understand that the difference of completely understanding the three times of past, present, and future, and the difference of completely understanding without any error as before, and the difference of impermanence of the grasping consciousness included in the knowledge of the abiding of dharma, will become seventy-seven bases of knowledge. By this, one can examine the nature of the truth.

After showing everything, then the truth will be realized, and gradually the state of Arhat will be attained. It should be understood that the conditioned phenomena of dependent origination enter gradually in three ways: namely, the cause increases, the result arises, and the result increases and is perfectly accomplished. When all of these are gathered together, they are called the increase, arising, and origination of phenomena. When the cause and result cease, it should be understood that they are called decrease, cessation, and disappearance, respectively. This is a category arising from intention and is not contrary to the nature of phenomena. Furthermore, with the distinctions of time in the past, present, and future, and with the distinctions of the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm, it should be understood that increase, decrease, arising, cessation, origination, and disappearance are combined in order. These two are pervasive defilements: the pervasive defilements of karma and craving, and the pervasive defilements of views. These two pervasive defilements are two aspects: it should be understood that they arise from the aspect of householders and the aspect of renunciates. Among them, whatever manifestly performs the pervasive defilements of karma and existence is called mind-born. Whatever pervasive defilement of views is aroused by wrong conception is called fully conceptualized. Therefore, ordinary individuals, whether householders or renunciates, are bound by these two pervasive defilements, and through the path of habitual tendencies, they generate pervasive defilements of mind in the four abodes of consciousness, and focusing on that, they manifestly accomplish rebirth again, and will not be completely liberated from coming and going in samsara. Those who have seen the four paths of learning have abandoned the pervasive defilements of views, and only a trace of the habitual tendencies of the state of pride, thinking 'I am,' remains, and they do not newly create karma, and they do not manifestly rejoice in rebirth, therefore they will not be bound by the pervasive defilements of karma and craving. Although that is so, the habitual tendencies of those pervasive defilements remain in their continuum, therefore
