becomes fortunate. What are the three trainings? They are the training in higher morality, the training in higher mind, and the training in higher wisdom. What is the wrong practice in these? For example, some people here, initially relying only on themselves or others, have no shame for the mistakes that occur in the trainings. Instead, they take pride in abandoning shame. As a result, they do not protect themselves from sinful and unwholesome dharmas. Because they do not protect themselves, they become disrespectful to the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, the trainings, the instructions, and the subsequent teachings, becoming shameless. If others criticize them in four ways, they become unable to bear those words and do not allow themselves to be criticized. They abandon those who speak of what is and is not, and only associate with those who share their views, becoming close to them and living together. Because they live with these people, they hate the noble ones. How would they directly go to meet those people? Even if they go directly and speak of the Dharma, because they hate the noble ones, they will not want to listen. Even if they happen to hear, they will not pay attention and will not listen with a desire to understand. They do not properly treat those who speak of what is and is not, complete enlightenment, the path, and wisdom. Even if they hear, they do not believe with a hateful mind and do not diligently practice. They also become unsuitable to be taught, and the noble ones do not consider speaking to them, instructing them, and giving them subsequent teachings. They are content with their own situation, and the noble ones abandon them even more. Therefore, the inner afflictions cannot be pacified, and the body, speech, and mind are always in a state of affliction. They are very skilled at hypocrisy and deception. They also do not think that they have any faults. As a result, even if mistakes occur, they do not correct them according to the Dharma. After getting used to this, they gradually proclaim licentious precepts, and this is

Furthermore, it should be understood that one is wrongly practicing through the gateway of higher discipline. Conversely, it should be understood that one is correctly practicing solely through the gateway of higher discipline. What is the wrong practice in higher mind training? When walking, due to taking the characteristics and signs of objects that are not in accordance with the proper way, one becomes forgetful. Not knowing that this is a fault, one embraces the arising afflictions and does not abide in mindfulness. When dwelling and sitting, one dwells in a place that is extremely solitary and without companionship, and because of dwelling in forgetfulness and without mindfulness, the mind is distracted outwardly. This is the wrong practice in higher mind training. Conversely, it should be understood that it is correct practice. What is the wrong practice in higher wisdom training? For example, here some people abandon the noble ones and reliance, and rely on relying on evil friends. Because they are fond of listening to what is not the true Dharma, they discriminate the Dharma in ways that are not in accordance with the proper way. They delight in and truly embrace sinful desires and sinful views. They regard themselves as superior to the vast Dharma that is to be realized and attained by dwelling. This is the wrong practice through the gateway of higher wisdom training. Conversely, it should be understood that it is correct practice. Therefore, an ordinary person, by relying on the wrong practice of these three trainings, does not have the opportunity to transcend the state of an ordinary person, enter into true faultlessness, and abandon the three bonds. Because the three bonds have not been abandoned, by relying on the path of further meditation, there is no opportunity to attain Arhatship, to abandon completely and without remainder attachment, hatred, delusion, and all afflictions in this life, and to truly pass beyond sickness, old age, and death in the next life. Conversely, for those who have truly entered the three trainings in this way, all aspects of virtue will be understood until the next life, when they will truly pass beyond sickness, old age, and death.
