Whatever cannot refute that which possesses the "mother," those (views) neither establish their own tenets nor refute the assertions of others, therefore they will be subdued. If someone asks in this way: Is happiness and suffering caused by oneself, or caused by others, or caused by both? We merely posit it through the meeting of the root, object, and consciousness, because there is no clinging to "I." Regarding this, clinging to "I" is your wrong view, and should not be debated. Why? Because that which arises from clinging is affliction, and that which arises from non-clinging is purification. Thus, the answer is given. What is the affliction that arises from clinging? Those foolish people who cling to "This is me, this is mine" at the edge of the past, due to ignorance, from "actions" onwards, as mentioned before, until at the middle edge, they will become the affliction of happiness and suffering. Those who cling to "This is me, this is mine" at the middle edge, until the edge of the future, will become the affliction of happiness and suffering. What is purification? Those who do not cling to "I" and "mine" regarding actions etc. at the edge of the past and the middle edge, at the edge of the past, due to the cessation of the cause of feeling, are completely liberated from suffering, and at the edge of the future, also due to the cessation of the cause of feeling, are completely liberated from suffering. This is the third answer, answering with affliction and purification arising from clinging and non-clinging. Having abandoned causelessness and incompatible causes, and having truly seen the five causes of phenomena arising from causes, in order not to be stolen from this Dharma and Vinaya, one will have perfect view, and in order to generate pure intention towards liberation from suffering, one will have upright view, and in order to have pure knowledge of the knowable, one will have faith after knowing the Buddha. These three causes, in order, are entering the true Dharma, closely entering, and comprehending.

It should be added with the syllable "ra." What are the five causes of all phenomena that have causes? The cause of bad destinies is like this: non-virtue and the root of non-virtue. The cause of good destinies is like this: virtue and the root of virtue. The cause of the abiding of consciousness and the abodes of consciousness is like this: the four foods. The cause of all afflictions in this life and future lives is like this: the outflows. The cause of purification is like this: the truths and dependent origination. If one knows well, just as it is, that the nature of those causes is also nature, that the cause is also cause, that the cessation of the cause is also cessation, and that the path that makes it cease is also the path, then it is called perfect view. The end of investigating the basis of dependent origination reaches ignorance, so there is no cause to investigate before that. Investigating that itself is the only way to completely fulfill one's own meaning. From the Compendium of Matters in the Yogācārabhūmi, fourteenth fascicle. These three are the basis of what should be known in this life: arising, accomplishment, the length of life, and abiding in the continuum until death. If one diligently practices studying these, then one is called a student, and one who does not study is called one whose everything is exhausted, and there is nothing to be exhausted, having realized with the wisdom of exhaustion and non-arising, one is called a possessor of the Dharma of realization. What are the three? The six sense bases and the contact arising from the six sense bases, and the feeling arising from the contact. For this, a noble disciple who has heard, whatever feeling he experiences, knows it completely, and diligently practices in order to be weary of them, to be free from desire, and to stop them, he knows well, just as it is, that those feelings arise from the food of contact. That food of contact also arises from the six sense bases. Therefore, in order to be weary of the six sense bases, which are the cause of the food of contact, and in order to stop that food of contact, he enters. Thus, having gathered together all the arising of feeling, contact, and the six sense bases, all of these are stopped by impermanence, they are the Dharma of cessation.
