What is difficult to understand? It is the correct establishment of the causes and effects of dependent origination. In all realms of sentient beings, the general term "sentient being" is universally applied. It should be understood that the path of this general term is precisely this. Abiding in this, due to the differences in the categories of sentient beings, specific terms such as birds, fish, poisonous snakes, as well as gods and humans, are used. Designation is the differentiation by individual names, such as parrots, squirrels, peacocks, Vaishravana, Dhritarashtra, Holy Birth, Good Eyes, Shariputra, Good Virtue, Helpless Food Giver, All Meaning Accomplished, and so on. Merely through these, words can be applied to those individuals who are designated by names. Whatever their feelings may be, whether arising from contact born of the aggregation of consciousness, contact born of the aggregation of ignorance, or contact born of the aggregation of neither consciousness nor ignorance, all of these are associated with name and form. If name and form completely cease, then feeling does not arise. It should be understood that this is difficult to understand as selflessness. For those detached beings, what is difficult to understand as connection? For example, those non-Buddhists who are bound by feelings arising from contact born of the aggregation of ignorance, through three ways, regard the selfless, dependently originated actions as self, and observe and proclaim them. What are these three ways? Regarding desires, if they have not abandoned desire, then for one of the three feelings associated with desire, they regard the object of feeling as self; for another, they regard the feeler as self. If they have abandoned desire for desires but have not abandoned desire for the third dhyana, then they cling to the pleasure that is solely experienced and will be experienced as self. When they recognize the self of the feeler as distinct from that feeling, and that the feeling, which has the nature of feeling, is also a kind of consciousness through the path of that feeling, they will see it. If they fail to comprehend the subtle feeling of neither suffering nor pleasure above the third dhyana, then if there is no feeling, then

I observe by considering that I have no feeling, and all those who cling to me in those three ways are not right. Why? Because the three feelings are impermanent, so I am also impermanent. Because the three feelings are seen as me, it is not right. In the fourth dhyana and above, where there is no feeling of pleasure, there is also no one who feels pleasure, so there, it is impossible to have a self with the nature of feeling through the feeling of pleasure. In general, in the fourth dhyana and above, in the formless samadhis, if the self that is experienced separately is non-existent, then the feeling arising from those peaceful samadhis will think that I have become peaceful, but there will be no such clinging, so that is also not right. If dependent origination is not profound, then because they do not understand that, those views will not become wrong. The noble hearer of this doctrine, who is endowed with hearing, when seized by the feeling arising from the contact of the aggregate of knowledge, does not regard it as self because he knows that everything is unreasonable. He is skilled in conventional and ultimate truth, so he does not cling to the Tathagata as existing after death, so like before, he connects to between neither existing nor not existing. Even to the mind of liberation itself, if one asks, 'Will anything exist?' he does not answer in the same way. Becoming non-existent, and both, and neither becoming both, all of those are also the same, he does not answer. Having known in this way beforehand, and then despising him for not answering, thinking that he does not understand, that is his own great ignorance and wrong view. Outsiders who practice such views, like before, rely on the three views, and in this life, they cling to the self as having form, or being formless, or small, or immeasurable. Just as they now mistakenly judge and point and indicate, so too will they only see the future. Although they mistakenly think of me in many ways, yet, for his aggregate
