It is because of relying on this. In the world, it is well-known to grasp onto what has characteristics, but it is not well-known to grasp onto what is without characteristics. If it is not possible without cause and condition, then what is its cause and what is its condition? Answer: The result of grasping that is completely accustomed to terminology is known to grasp onto what has characteristics, which becomes completely afflicted. The result of grasping that is completely accustomed to ultimate wisdom is to grasp onto what is without characteristics, which becomes completely purified. Therefore, both of these have cause and condition. For example, if there is a defect of cataracts in the eyes, one will perceive the characteristics of cataracts such as tangled hair, but if there is no defect, one will not perceive them, just as one perceives ordinary things. If one grasps onto the realm of no characteristics as a characteristic, then one will not become grasping onto no characteristics. If one does not grasp, then even so, one will not become grasping onto no characteristics. Answer: Grasping is because there is no habitual tendency of terminology, so even when grasping onto the realm of no characteristics, one does not grasp it as a characteristic, so it is reasonable to grasp onto no characteristics. If one does not grasp it as a characteristic, then how does one grasp it? Because its characteristic is destroyed, and there is no imputation of grasping it as a manifest sign. If even if one does not grasp it as a characteristic, there is no imputation of grasping it as a manifest sign, then how should the characteristic itself be known? Answer: Because one grasps onto the ultimate truth, and it is not grasping onto no characteristics, and the nature of all characteristics not appearing on the five things. If it is established as grasping unclearly, then why is grasping only cessation and not permanent? Answer: Because cessation is not a manifest action, therefore the yogi does not manifestly act in order to cease it. How should its nature be individually known? Answer: By the wisdom of individual self-awareness. Since one individually knows in this way, why does one not answer? Answer: Because individual knowledge is not the basis of expression. If the first knowledge is not without characteristics, then because it does not exist, the habituation of knowledge without characteristics will also not exist.

If one is not familiar with it, then the signless cannot arise from a causeless origin, is that so? It is said: That which possesses signs can also have the signless as its cause, because they are in accordance with it. For example, relying on the mundane, the supramundane arises, and relying on the defiled, the undefiled arises, and relying on the absorption with mind, the mindless arises, and it is similar. The Blessed One said that knowing suffering and so on is the cause of purity. If, by knowing suffering and so on, one completely grasps the truth of suffering and so on as suffering and so on, then it will become with signs. If one does not completely grasp it, then one will not know suffering and so on. If there is no knowing, how can it become pure? It is said: For the truths, the purity of mundane and supramundane knowledge arises from the power of signless knowledge. Therefore, by completely abandoning the afflictions through it, the signless knowledge is the cause of the knowledge of suffering and so on, and whatever abandons the afflictions, to that one, having established the cause and effect relationship, and by knowing suffering and so on, approximating the establishment, there is no fault. If it is said that the previously grasped is the one with the fruit of grasping, then what is the fruit of that grasping that should be said? It is said: Both are the fruit of one. When the knowable is impermanent, familiar, dependent, immeasurable, and mostly hidden, how does that yogi focus on it and also eliminate it? It is said: Through the power of hearing and thinking, one will attain samadhi. Through it, having manifested the image of the samadhi of the five aspects of the knowable, one focuses on that knowable. By overpowering, one eliminates it. What kind of characteristic should be said to be the overpowering by the five aspects of the knowable? It is said: Becoming a dwelling place, the unconditioned, the characteristic of nirvana is unsurpassed. What is nirvana? It is the completely pure realm of Dharma, free from afflictions and suffering.
