There are also non-reasons, namely the four, such as name and reason. Is it the case that whatever contemplates reason contemplates the connection that possesses name and reason? Is it the case that whatever contemplates name and reason contemplates the connection that possesses reason and reason? There are four possibilities: One contemplates reason but does not contemplate the connection that possesses name and reason; for example, the reason that contemplates the reason of not understanding the name, and whatever eliminates the predispositions of the name. One contemplates name and reason but does not contemplate the connection that possesses reason and reason; for example, the reason that contemplates the name of not understanding the object. The opposite of that is both. Other than those aspects is neither. Does whatever attends to suchness only see suchness? Does whatever sees suchness only attend to suchness? There are four possibilities: One attends to suchness but does not see suchness; for example, when attending to suchness with attention that is included by conceptual thought, as long as one has not understood, the sign of suchness will appear, but suchness will not be seen or understood; and even after understanding, one attends to suchness that is subsequently conceptually established. One sees suchness but does not attend to suchness; for example, when understanding suchness, one attends to the signless in ultimate reality. One also sees suchness and only attends to suchness; for example, one continuously attends to suchness that has not been conceptually established after understanding. One neither sees suchness nor attends to suchness; for example, one attends to the sign with attention that is not generated by reasoning. Whatever attends to the sign,

Then, does correctly perceiving a sign mean focusing on the sign itself? There are four possibilities: There are cases where one focuses on a sign but does not see it, such as the second case. There are cases where one sees a sign but does not focus on it, such as the first case. There are cases where one focuses on a sign and also sees it, such as the fourth case. There are cases where one focuses on a sign but does not see it, such as the third case. Do these five things encompass all dharmas? The answer is yes. What is the nature of these dharmas that is being spoken of? The answer is, the inexpressible nature is mind. How should one view their characteristics? The answer is, their characteristics are like illusions, but they are not non-existent. For example, the function of illusion exists, but the nature of horses, elephants, chariots, infantry, jewels, pearls, gold, silver, and so on does not exist. Similarly, nature exists only as name and sign, and is not an existing thing that can be designated as nature and difference. By the name "reason, reason," the nature of reason is invisible. Just as with reason, by name the nature of name is invisible, by discrimination the nature of discrimination is invisible, by suchness the nature of suchness is invisible, by correct knowledge, by the name correct knowledge, the nature of correct knowledge is invisible. Why is that? Because its nature is unreasonable in every way. If it is said that because nature establishes reason, a name corresponding to it is attached to it, then the attachment depends on the reason. Then, before the attachment, just as with establishing a name, such a thought arises about the reason, and because there are many attachments to one reason, and because of the variety,

Therefore, many benefits will be obtained. Therefore, appropriation should not depend on reason. If, just as names are assigned to reasons, the very nature of reason arises by virtue of names, then before appropriation, the very nature of reason would not exist. If it does not exist, appropriation would also not exist, so both would be subject to the fault of non-existence. Moreover, due to the multiplicity and variety of appropriations, there would also be the faults of multiple self-natures and being subject to others. Being subject to others is because of appropriation to reason, therefore, all appropriations cannot be its self-nature. It is like the various bodies of a magical being created by a magician. For example, the magician manifests a magical being with various bodies such as men, women, elephants, horses, bears, and so on, but none of these bodies is its self-nature. Similarly, reason should not be regarded as the self-nature of all appropriations. If reason and appropriation combine to generate a nature separate from them, then can its reason, name, both, or one of the intermediate factors be identified? It cannot be identified, therefore, that is also unreasonable. Thus, self-nature arises from terminology. If it is thought that appropriation makes the self-natures manifest, that is also unreasonable, because whether grasped or not grasped, there will be the fault of appropriation. If appropriation is done by grasping the reason, then it cannot be a manifestation. If appropriation is done without grasping the reason, then appropriation without a basis is unreasonable. As before, there will also be the fault of not being the self-nature, because appropriations are many and varied. The example of manifestation is dissimilar, therefore it is unreasonable. The dissimilarity is that it appears and makes manifest.
