Conceptualization is what is abandoned by seeing and what is abandoned by cultivation. Suchness is not what is abandoned. True correct knowledge is only what is abandoned. If one focuses on the cause, how many mindfulnesses does one cultivate? It is said: All four. If one focuses on the name, how many? It is said: One, namely the mindfulness of phenomena. If one focuses on conceptualization, how many? It is said: Three, namely feeling, mind, and mindfulness of phenomena. If one focuses on suchness, how many? It is said: One, namely the mindfulness of phenomena. When one attends to the suchness of the characteristic of the body, one also cultivates the mindfulness of phenomena that focuses on mixture. It is the same for the characteristics of feeling, mind, and phenomena. If one focuses on true correct knowledge, how many? It is said: Only three, just like conceptualization. If one focuses on the cause, should one say that one abandons all the sinful and unwholesome dharmas that have arisen, or should one say that one does not abandon them? It is said: One should say that one abandons them with abandonment by suppression, but not with abandonment that completely destroys the latent tendencies. Just as with the cause, it is the same with name and conceptualization. Focusing on suchness and focusing on true correct knowledge, one should also say that one abandons them with abandonment that completely destroys the latent tendencies. Among these five things, when one attends to how many things does one enter into the worldly first dhyana? Thinking: When one attends to the cause that is associated with desire and associated with the ground of the first dhyana, and to name and conceptualization. Similarly, when one attends to the lower one and the cause that is associated with the ground of the second dhyana, and to name and conceptualization, one enters into the worldly second dhyana. For the remaining samapattis of dhyana and the formless, one should understand them accordingly. When one attends to how many things does one enter into the supramundane first dhyana? It is said: When one attends to the cause that is associated with desire and associated with the ground of the first dhyana.

And, it is the same when contemplating the suchness of those very names and discriminations. Likewise, one should understand as appropriate up to the sphere of nothingness. For the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, it is definitely only worldly beings who can achieve it. The reason for possessing the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. What should be said to be the reason? Answer: Absence of characteristics is the reason, subtlety is the reason. For those five objects, which are the dharmas such as faith, what are their natures, what are their objects, and by what lords do they obtain the name of faculties? Answer: By the nature of discrimination, by taking names and reasons as objects, and by the lords of suchness and correct knowledge. Just as the names of the faculties are, so too are the names of the powers. In what state does one obtain the name of power? Answer: When those faculties of faith and so on themselves do not mix with non-faith and so on, and become the nature of non-mixing. Just as the faculties and powers are, so too should those worldly limbs of enlightenment, such as mindfulness, be regarded as being the nature of discrimination, since they are limbs for enlightenment. Those supramundane limbs of enlightenment, such as mindfulness, should be regarded as being the nature of correct knowledge, since they are limbs of enlightenment, with suchness as the object, and as being the lord who realizes the truth of establishment. Those limbs of the path, such as right view, which are worldly, those should be regarded as before. Those which are supramundane are the nature of not understanding the limb of discipline from correct knowledge, and the unseparated truth, and the separated suchness as the object, and as the lord who manifests the exhaustion of all defilements, and dwells happily in this life. Just as the limbs of the path are, so too should the path, the basis of dharma, calm abiding, and insight be regarded in the same way. Among them, the path refers to dull faculties, sharp faculties, separation, and happiness in this life.
