The Compendium of Determinations from the Treatise on the Grounds of Yogic Practice, by Asanga. The Compendium of Determinations from the Treatise on the Grounds of Yogic Practice. By Asanga. The Compendium of Determinations, Volume Thirty-Three. Should a name be said to be other than its reason, or should it be said to be not other? It is said: Neither should be said. Why is that? Because both would lead to faults. If it is other, what fault is there? The name would become a substance. If it is not other, what fault is there? When the reason is grasped, the name would also be grasped. Should a conceptualization be said to be other than its reason, or should it be said to be not other? It is said: Neither should be said. Why is that? Because both would lead to faults. If it is other, what fault is there? Conceptualizations would not be the nature of reasons. If it is not other, what fault is there? The reasons for conceptualization and delusion would also become solely the nature of conceptualization. Should suchness be said to be other than its reason, or should it be said to be not other? It is said: Neither should be said. Why is that? Because both would lead to faults. If it is other, what fault is there? The ultimate truth of the reason would not become suchness, and yogis would seek suchness without relying on reasons, and even if suchness is manifestly awakened, the reason would not be manifestly awakened. If it is not other, what fault is there? Just as there is no distinction in suchness, so too there would be no distinction in all reasons, and when a reason is apprehended, suchness would also be apprehended, and even if suchness is apprehended, it would not become purified like the reason. For example, although conditioned phenomena have the general characteristics of impermanence, suffering, and selflessness, it should not be said that they are other than them or not other than them, and although the body and mind have afflictions and pliancy, the body

And with respect to mind, it should not be said that those are other or not other; although virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified dharmas have seeds, it should not be said that those are other or not other, because both statements would lead to faults. For example, space is all-pervasive, so although there is space in the aspect of form, it should not be said that it is other or not other than that, why is that? Because both statements would lead to faults. If it is other, what is the fault? Because space is not all-pervasive, it would become impermanent. If it is not other, what is the fault? Space would not become other than the aspect of form, similarly, here too, one should observe in various appropriate ways. The Blessed One, starting from the Hearer Vehicle, also fully showed how to answer in some cases that formations are neither other nor not other, as it is said: "Monks, the aggregates themselves are not what is clung to, nor is there clinging apart from the aggregates, but whatever desire and attachment there is for this, that is what is clung to here." To that, if it is not other, what is the fault? It is said: The fault of slandering the virtue and unspecified of the aggregates, and of not being completely purified. If it is other, what is the fault? It is said: The fault of superimposing permanence on clinging, and of not being completely purified. The reason and suchness as they are, name, discrimination, and valid knowledge should also be observed in the same way. From the reason, should valid knowledge be said to be other or not other? It is said: Like discrimination, neither should be said. From name, should discrimination be said to be other or not other? It is said: It should be said to be other. From name, should valid knowledge be said to be other or not other? It is said: It should be said to be other. From discrimination, should valid knowledge be said to be other or not other?

If it should be said thus, the answer is: it should be said elsewhere. What is the nature of a cause? The answer is: it is the nature of the object of conceptualization. What is the nature of a name? The answer is: it is the nature of the place of designation. What is the nature of conceptualization? The answer is: it is the nature of the object of a cause. What is the nature of suchness? The answer is: it is the nature of the object of correct knowledge. What is the nature of correct knowledge? The answer is: it is the nature of the object of suchness. What is the aspect of a cause? The answer is: because the aspects of conceptualizations are various and immeasurable, it should be known that its aspects are also various and immeasurable.
