Although it is a dharma that leads to enlightenment, it mostly enters with a fearful attitude towards the truths that are established through distinctions, therefore it is accomplished correctly. Just as with the Shravakas, so too are the Pratyekabuddhas. Although the Buddhas do not arise, they will become manifestly and perfectly enlightened, therefore they are superior. Bodhisattvas should be observed only from the three causes that are the opposite of this. How should one observe that the Shravakas are utterly degenerated from the Dharma and Vinaya? If one completely thinks that it is only preventing the plague of afflictions, then one will become afraid, thinking, "I will be cut off, I will be exhausted, I will not arise." For example, if someone is afflicted by a plague, and he does not know that if the plague occurs, all will become healthy, he will completely think that the entire body will perish and become afraid. Therefore, he will not be completely liberated from the plague. Likewise, the Shravakas should be viewed in the same way. How does a Bodhisattva degenerate from the Mahayana? If, upon hearing of the profundity and selflessness of all dharmas, one completely thinks that the plague of afflictions is naturally absent, and one considers oneself to be without illness. For example, if a person afflicted by a plague considers himself to be without illness, he will not be completely liberated from the plague, and he will degenerate. Similarly, that Bodhisattva should be viewed in the same way. Among these five things, which are aggregates of disintegration? Which are not aggregates of disintegration? It is said: The reason is both. Two are aggregates of disintegration. One is not an aggregate of disintegration. Suchness should be said to be neither. Just as with aggregates of disintegration, so too should existence and the world be viewed. Then, from these four suchnesses and five things, are the five things completely included in suchness? It is said: The suchness of worldly fame and the suchness of logical fame are included by three things. The obscuration of afflictions is completely purified.

The suchness of the sphere of wisdom, and the suchness of the sphere of wisdom that completely purifies the obscuration of knowledge, are encompassed by two things. Among the four kinds of complete seeking and the five things, how many complete seekings are encompassed by the five things? Answer: Because of having discrimination and proper attention, all four complete seekings are encompassed. Among the four kinds of knowing exactly as it is and the five things, how many kinds of knowing exactly as it is are encompassed by how many things? Answer: All four are encompassed by true knowledge. From what intention did the Bhagavan say that all dharmas are non-dual? Answer: He spoke with the intention of the very five things themselves, from the selflessness of the nature arising from terminology, and from the very nature of having self with their own characteristics. From what intention did the Bhagavan say that all dharmas are without self-nature? Answer: He spoke with the intention of the three kinds of selflessness in that and that from the perspective of taming, namely: characteristic selflessness, arising selflessness, and ultimate selflessness. What is characteristic selflessness? It is like this: the nature arising from the terminology of dharmas. What is arising selflessness? It is like this: since conditioned things are interdependent arising, they arise by the power of conditions, but they do not arise by themselves, this is called arising selflessness. What is ultimate selflessness? It is said that whatever dharma is devoid of characteristics by the meaning of suchness is called ultimate selflessness. For example, if a monastic practitioner contemplates many skeletons of bones but is unable to destroy them, then, like the constant and uninterrupted arising of the perception of ultimate selflessness in that skeleton of bones, ultimate selflessness should also be viewed in the same way. Therefore, those five things, by characteristic selflessness, are not without self-nature, and arising selflessness and ultimate

Because its own nature is emptiness, it also changes as appropriate. In that, cause, name, distinction, and true knowledge are two. Thus, Suchness is emptiness itself, not emptied by any emptiness. The Blessed One, having understood this, spoke of one truth, without a second, as stated in the verses. From what did the Blessed One understand and say that all dharmas are unborn, unceasing, originally peaceful, and naturally completely liberated from suffering? He said, "From the very nature of characteristic emptiness." From what did the Blessed One understand and say that all dharmas are like the sky? He said, "From the very nature of characteristic emptiness." From what did the Blessed One understand and say that all dharmas are like illusions? He said, "From the emptiness of inherent existence of arising and the emptiness of ultimate reality." From what did the Blessed One understand and say that form exists, and even consciousness exists, and is truly seen as impermanent? He said, "From the very nature of characteristic emptiness." Why is that? Thus, what is said to be truly seen as impermanent is said to be truly seen as existing in impermanence. From what did the Blessed One understand and say that form exists, and even consciousness exists, and is truly seen as suffering? He said, "From the emptiness of inherent existence of arising and the emptiness of ultimate reality." From what did the Blessed One understand and say that form exists, and even consciousness exists, and is truly seen as emptiness? He said, "From the very nature of characteristics of dharmas being devoid of inherent existence, and from the emptiness of inherent existence of their arising, and from the emptiness of ultimate reality." It should be regarded that, just as with being devoid, he understood and spoke of selflessness from the non-difference of characteristics.
