They are merely accumulated and covered by afflictions. Bodhisattvas, however, are all sentient beings in the four directions. Although śrāvakas truly attain liberation from contemplating the supreme Dharma, they do not become sons of the Buddha. Bodhisattvas, however, become sons of the Buddha even though they truly attain liberation from contemplating actions, sentient beings, and evil dharmas. Although śrāvakas exert effort, are skilled in truth, and well place their minds in samādhi, they are not embraced by the Buddhas like Bodhisattvas because they do not possess the characteristics of the Buddha's lineage. Bodhisattvas are the opposite of that. Although śrāvakas are those who have reached the ultimate, and their faculties are fully matured, they cannot perform the deeds of the Buddha later. Bodhisattvas, however, can do so even with the initial generation of the mind in that instant. Although śrāvakas have reached the ultimate, they are not worthy of being worshiped and praised by gods and humans like Bodhisattvas who have entered the initial practice. Bodhisattvas are. Although Bodhisattvas are not those who have reached the ultimate, they surpass all śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas with their power and knowledge. Although śrāvakas are those who have fully accomplished the medicine of wisdom that pacifies the disease of afflictions, they do not pacify the disease of afflictions of sentient beings. Bodhisattvas, however, are the opposite of that because they are engaged in the benefit of others. Although śrāvakas are those who have reached the ultimate, they are not like Bodhisattvas, whose afflictions are exhausted and who bring the light of wisdom to sentient beings, and thus become worthy objects of offering for the world with gods. Bodhisattvas are. The Tathāgatas are always far superior to the śrāvakas, and the Bodhisattvas are even more superior to them, because the Tathāgatas are truly accomplished from them. It should be known that the Tathāgatas are most superior in two causes, that is, the Tathāgatas

It is for the sake of fully maturing sentient beings and fully maturing the Buddha's teachings. From this, the fruit of enlightenment is attained, and how do those sentient beings who have been fully matured become liberated? For example, just as practitioners and cooks have amazing thoughts, but not so for eaters, so too should this be understood. The Hearers, taking the cause of the completely pure Dharma in one way, abide in it, and although they are fully embraced by many virtuous friends, they will not manifest the fruit of great enlightenment. Bodhisattvas, on the other hand, can accomplish it by the opposite means. Dependent on Bodhisattvas, Hearers will arise, but dependent on Hearers, Bodhisattvas will not arise. What benefit to others is done by worldly and transworldly wisdom? Here, Bodhisattvas may transmigrate to other realms in all directions, or transmigrate to other places, or transmigrate to other births, or be requested by others. To sentient beings who are afflicted by the demons of afflictions, by showing the three pure trainings, they heal them and are unsurpassed doctors. What is worldly wisdom? It is the antidote that eliminates coarse afflictions and the antidote that suppresses intermediate afflictions. What are coarse afflictions? They are the attachment, hatred, and ignorance practiced by householders, and the adherence to the views of renunciants, and acting in a way that is not in accordance with reality, and the desire for existence, and the collection of the four inversions, and the adherence to what is not liberation as liberation. What are intermediate afflictions? They are the states in which attachment, hatred, and ignorance entangle the objects from which coarse afflictions have been removed by relying on their respective antidotes. Because the object is not properly abandoned, in order to stabilize the mind that has not been stabilized, when striving with the dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment, then

and is able to subdue. Through meditation, one should also not cling to the self, but rather strive to keep the mind focused on the object. After that, one should cling to the state in which one is. By clinging to this, the overall clinging to the body, and the various afflictions that arise from it, will be subdued. After that, one should abandon the unfavorable aspects of the Dharma that transcends the world, abide in the antidote, and make it stable. After that, one should subdue the universal bewilderment regarding dependent origination, the selflessness of the person, and the selflessness of phenomena. After that, one will be certain of the wrong path and the right path. In this way, through these methods, one can eliminate coarse and medium afflictions, and the wisdom that becomes the antidote to subdue afflictions is called worldly wisdom. What is the wisdom that transcends the world? It is the wisdom that suppresses the afflictions that are entangled by desire, hatred, and ignorance, and becomes the antidote to the subtle habitual tendencies of afflictions. What is that? It is the three states of being skilled in the antidote to subdue afflictions, being skilled in dependent origination, believing in the selflessness of the person, and believing in the selflessness of phenomena, and the four kinds of ignorance that arise in order to completely liberate from all afflictions. That is, not understanding the general characteristics, not understanding the individual characteristics, not understanding the characteristics of afflictions, and not understanding the characteristics of purification, through the antidote, without relying on the teachings of the scriptures, but rather individually discerning and striving in one's own mind. Among these, the general characteristics of the mind can be understood in three ways: that is, there is no hidden movement in dependent origination, there is no movement in such an instant, and the mind that arises from causes such as desire is not created. The individual characteristics of the mind can also be understood in three ways: as before, through the nature that arises from terms is invisible, as before,
