It enables liberation from downfalls, liberation from attachment to the lesser vehicle, and liberation from universal weariness and anger towards the teachings. How does a Bodhisattva enter into correct practice and obtain these benefits? It is through practicing the Dharma, practicing equanimity, practicing virtue, and abiding in the Dharma. How is one practicing the Dharma? How many aspects are there to this? It is practicing without transgressing the Dharma of a Bodhisattva; therefore, it is practicing the Dharma. This can be understood in five aspects: Having compassion for those who harm beings and commit evil, with the intention of leading them to virtue and benefiting them; Showing the mind of enlightenment to those who abide in their lineage and are without obstacles; Knowing oneself in relation to the particularly excellent perfections; Connecting with teachers and the like through respect and prostration; And not wavering from the teachings for those non-conformist heretics. How is one practicing equanimity? How many aspects are there to this? It is universally practicing equally for the benefit of all beings; therefore, it is practicing equanimity. This can be understood in eight aspects: Having equal love for all beings; Being without afflictions for all beings; Having no different times; Equally making each one happy with love that has no difference in the stream of mind; Abandoning noisy talk, taking on responsibilities with a joyful face and bringing them to fruition; Causing those who have not equally taken on responsibilities to take them on; Equally enduring all suffering; Equally seeking immeasurable means of taming; Equally having words that are endowed with the ability to tolerate correct words with each other; And equally dedicating all roots of virtue to enlightenment. How does a Bodhisattva practice virtue? How many aspects are there to this? It is through relying on the complete maturation of the Buddha's Dharma internally and the complete maturation of sentient beings externally, one universally practices virtue.

That is why one should practice virtue. This is to be understood as sevenfold: namely, non-abiding generosity, non-abiding ethics, loving patience, non-ephemeral diligence, meditative concentration on the place of benefiting sentient beings, wisdom free from views, and skill in means for complete maturation. How does a Bodhisattva abide in the Dharma? How many aspects are there to this? Not taking complete understanding as paramount, not taking recitation as paramount, not taking explanation as paramount, not taking conceptualization as paramount, but engaging in the cultivation of the quiescence of the inner mind, and truly accomplishing it. Therefore, one abides in the Dharma. This is to be understood as twelvefold: namely, with respect to the one who shows the instructions, not discriminating between abiding in ethics and not abiding in ethics, thereby respectfully receiving the instructions, thereby having physical solitude, thereby having mental solitude, thereby completely transcending the mental activity associated with the Hearer Vehicle, and engaging in mental activity associated with the Great Vehicle, thereby in extreme solitude, associating with sentient beings who have abandoned diligence, and not associating with others, thereby purely experiencing worldly knowledge, the great accumulation of merit, and the fruits of cultivating power separately, not being content with worldly knowledge, but completely seeking and cultivating transcendent knowledge, abandoning the four faults of pure knowledge and completely gathering accumulations, namely, the fault of not enduring harm, the fault of showing and instructing uncertainly, the fault of not acting as one has spoken, and the fault of a mind with defilements. These four aspects, and the previous eight aspects, are the twelve aspects. What are the examples of generating faith in a Bodhisattva? From the time a Bodhisattva generates the first thought of enlightenment, in the beginning, middle, and end, the roots of virtue of all sentient beings are manifestly

Because it is a place of practice, it is like the earth, as its mind is never weary of all those who harm and refute. Although this is so, just as beings rely on the ordinary earth and harm it with their own masculine actions, bodhisattvas are not like that. To generate roots of virtue, they moisten with extreme joy and supreme delight, and are also like water. Although this is so, just as water is not suitable for ripening crops, they are not like that. To ripen roots of virtue, they are always weary of all things that cause weariness, and are like fire, always weary and afflicted. Although this is so, just as fire is not suitable for adorning Buddha-fields, they are not like that. To enable those whose roots of virtue are ripe to touch liberation, they practice the true Dharma and are also like wind. Although this is so, just as wind, once practiced, becomes binding, they are not like that. To increase their own white Dharma, they are also like the moon. Although this is so, just as the moon only appears during the waxing phase and not during the waning phase, they are not like that. Bodhisattvas, with their universal nature, illuminate all dharmas of both the dark and white sides, and are also like the sun. Although this is so, just as the sun wanders everywhere, fearing Rahu, they are not like that. Bodhisattvas enter beings without fear of all the planets of affliction, and are also like lions. Although this is so, just as a lion can be overwhelmed by a heavy burden, they are not like that. They carry the burden of all suffering and are also like great elephants. Although this is so, just as elephants are affected by gain and loss, gentleness and harshness, pleasure and pain, giving rise to attachment and anger.
