and those who practice. If someone asks, in what state do Bodhisattvas abide? The answer is: they abide in the state of non-discrimination. The great obstacles of Bodhisattvas are fourfold, and if these obstacles can be completely purified, Bodhisattvas can enter the Bodhisattva grounds and will not lose the opportunity to attain them. What are these four obstacles? They are: having afflictive downfalls in the discipline of a Bodhisattva, abandoning and slandering the Dharma that possesses the Great Vehicle, not accumulating roots of virtue, and having a mind with defilements. In order to counteract these four great obstacles, it is necessary to recognize four kinds of Dharma that can completely purify obstacles. What are these four? They are: confessing misdeeds before all the Tathagatas of the ten directions, supplicating all the Tathagatas in order to teach the Dharma for the sake of all sentient beings of the ten directions, rejoicing in all the merits of all sentient beings of the ten directions, and dedicating all the roots of virtue, both done and undone, to unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. Even for those who have attained the Bodhisattva grounds, there are four subtle near-afflictions that are difficult to fully understand and abandon. Bodhisattvas should understand these near-afflictions and abandon them after understanding them. What are these four? They are: weariness with the Dharma, having the intention associated with Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, savoring the taste of meditative absorption, and the activities of Mara. Among these, the activities of Mara are to be understood as any instance of the mind being distracted from signs. If someone asks, what does a Bodhisattva become after attaining the first ground? The answer is: they have completely transcended all the states of ordinary beings, have entered the flawless state of the reality of a Bodhisattva, and because they have entered this state, they are no longer ordinary beings, have completely transcended all fears, and because they have obtained the unsurpassed unmixed Dharma, they can be said to constantly abide in great joy. What happens when a Bodhisattva attains the second ground?

If someone asks, how should one describe someone who has become a Bhikshu? The answer is, for someone who upholds the Vinaya, merely through the precepts naturally obtained, he has completely accomplished the learning and training of the Shravaka Vehicle, because all actions of his body, speech, and mind are completely pure, so it should be said that he is free from the defilement of breaking vows. If someone asks, how should one describe a Bodhisattva who abides on the Third Ground? The answer is, because he has obtained the power of the path of inner Shamatha, it should be said that he has attained the realization of the appearance of knowables. If someone asks, how should one describe a Bodhisattva who abides on the Fourth Ground? The answer is, because he has obtained the power of the path of inner Vipashyana, and abides in the light of wisdom that illuminates the source of afflictions, it should be said that he is skilled in truly establishing the dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment. If someone asks, how should one describe a Bodhisattva who abides on the Fifth Ground? The answer is, because he has completely transcended all worldly knowledge, and has completely transcended all the knowledge of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, it should be said that he has entered the inconceivable truth, and has truly entered the path that is extremely difficult to subdue. If someone asks, how should one describe a Bodhisattva who abides on the Sixth Ground? The answer is, because he has entered the nature of profound dependent origination, it should be said that he abides in the non-rational attention to all conditioned phenomena, and he abides greatly in the realm of signlessness itself, and in the place where activities manifest. If someone asks, how should one describe a Bodhisattva who abides on the Seventh Ground? The answer is, because he constantly attends to the realm of signlessness in a functional way, it should be said that he has entered it for a very long time, and is the ultimate of the Path of Application. If someone asks, how should one describe a Bodhisattva who abides on the Eighth Ground? The answer is, because he can obtain the attention to the realm of signlessness as he wishes, without effort or exertion, it should be said that he is unshakeable, and has obtained mastery over all signs, and abides in the pure land.
