Without noble qualities, one cannot attain pure joy. Those who expound the Dharma for the sake of desire will be accepted because they have abandoned desire. Those foolish ones, even if they obtain the priceless jewel of the Dharma, will abandon it and let it slip away. Therefore, strive to completely abandon disputes and clamor, and for the sake of liberating the world, including the gods, diligently practice this yoga. Then, Bodhisattva Maitreya asked the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is the name of this Dharma teaching called 'Definitive Explanation of the Holy Teaching' shown in this sutra? How should we uphold it?" The Blessed One replied to him: "Maitreya, this is called 'Definitive Explanation of the Meaning of Yoga,' and it should be upheld as such." When this 'Definitive Explanation of the Meaning of Yoga' was expounded, six hundred thousand beings generated the aspiration for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Three hundred thousand Shravakas obtained the Dharma eye, which is without dust, without defilement, and pure, in all Dharmas. One hundred and fifty thousand Shravakas were liberated from all outflows, their minds without attachment. Seventy-five thousand Bodhisattvas obtained the great yoga of mental cultivation. Forty volumes. Beginning with the establishment of the vehicle, the differences of the vehicles are explained as they are, and it should be viewed as it is stated in the 'Definitive Explanation of the Holy Teaching.' Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara asked the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what are the ten Bhumis of the Bodhisattvas? Namely, the Joyful Bhumi of the Bodhisattva, the Stainless Bhumi, the Luminous Bhumi, the Blazing Bhumi, the Very Difficult to Conquer Bhumi, the Manifest Bhumi, the Far-Reaching Bhumi, the Immovable Bhumi, the Good Wisdom Bhumi, and the Cloud of Dharma Bhumi. The Buddha Bhumi is the eleventh Bhumi, so how many kinds of purity and how many kinds of limbs are these Bhumis encompassed by?" The Blessed One replied: "Avalokiteshvara, these Bhumis should be understood as being encompassed by four kinds of purity and eleven kinds of limbs. Avalo-

The first of the lands, the Lord of the Earth Gazing, is encompassed by perfectly pure thought. The second land is by perfectly pure higher morality. The third land is by perfectly pure higher mind. From the fourth land onwards, up to the land of the Buddha, it is to be understood that higher wisdom, which is perfectly pure, is encompassed by what is even more excellent than what is increasingly excellent. Those lands are encompassed by those four perfectly pure qualities. What are the eleven branches? On the land where the bodhisattva, the Lord of Compassionate Gazing, practices with aspiration, because of intensely cultivating aspiration for the ten kinds of practices, having truly transcended that land with forbearance, one enters the flawless state of a true bodhisattva. Although that branch is completely perfect, one is unable to knowingly engage in the errors of subtle downfalls, so that branch is not completely perfect. In order to make that branch completely perfect, one can also attain it through effort. Although that branch is completely perfect, one is unable to abide in complete worldly samadhi and to attain complete retention of learning, so that branch is not completely perfect. In order to make that branch completely perfect, one can also attain it through effort. Although that branch is completely perfect, one is unable to abide in those qualities that are in harmony with the aspects of enlightenment as often as one has attained them, and one is unable to especially abandon the mind from attachment to dharma and craving for samadhi, so that branch is not completely perfect. In order to make that branch completely perfect, one can also attain it through effort. Although that branch is completely perfect, one is unable to discriminate the truths, to not be solely inclined towards samsara and nirvana, to especially abandon the manifest inclination of attention, and to meditate on the qualities that are in harmony with the aspects of enlightenment, which are completely grasped by skillful means, so that branch is not completely perfect. In order to make that branch completely perfect, one can also attain it through effort. Although that branch is completely perfect, regarding the activity of conditioned phenomena...
