The first Bhumi of Thong is the antidote to the afflictions, karma, and pervasive afflictions of birth in the lower realms. The second is the antidote to all arising errors of subtle downfalls. The third is the antidote to desire's attachment. The fourth is the antidote to craving for meditative absorption and craving for Dharma. The fifth is the antidote to not being biased towards either samsara or nirvana, and to the very manifestation of being biased. The sixth is the antidote to the arising of many signs. The seventh is the antidote to the arising of subtle signs. The eighth is the antidote to striving for the signless and not having mastery over signs. The ninth is the antidote to not having mastery over teaching the Dharma in all ways. The tenth is the antidote to not attaining the perfect and complete Dharmakaya, each individually and correctly known. Maitreya, the Shama and Vipashyana of the Tathagata Bhumi are the antidotes to the extremely subtle afflictions and obscurations of knowledge, the supremely subtle. Because they are well subdued, when abiding in the extremely pure Dharmakaya, one obtains unobstructed knowledge and vision, without any attachment whatsoever to the object of complete accomplishment. World Honored One, how should a Bodhisattva cultivate Shama and Vipashyana so that they may manifest and awaken to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment? The World Honored One said: Maitreya, here, after a Bodhisattva has attained Shama and Vipashyana, arising from the seven suchnesses, with a mind of equanimity towards the Dharmas that have been heard and contemplated, taking them well, thinking them well, and establishing them well, that very suchness is contemplated inwardly. Thus, when that very suchness is contemplated, for all the subtle signs that arise, one should temporarily place the mind in extreme equanimity. What need is there to mention the gross ones? Maitreya, these are the subtle signs: the sign of the mind's taking, or the sign of feeling, or the sign of consciousness, or the sign of pervasive affliction and complete purification, or the sign of the internal, or the sign of the external, or the sign of both, or the sign of thinking that one should apply it for the benefit of all sentient beings, or...

Or the sign of recognition, or suchness, or suffering, or arising, or cessation, or the sign of the path, or the sign of the conditioned, or the sign of the unconditioned, or the sign of permanence, or the sign of impermanence, or the sign of the nature of suffering and change, or the sign of the unchanging nature, or the sign of the different nature of the conditioned, or the sign of its own nature, or knowing all as the sign of all, or the sign of selflessness in persons, or the sign of selflessness in phenomena, whatever they are, the mind is especially placed in equanimity in the arising of all of them. Having entered in this way and stayed there many times, from time to time, from obstacles and obscurations and distractions, the mind acts in this way, and for that, the suchness that each one recognizes for himself in his own being, the seven kinds of wisdom that realize each of the seven aspects, the seven kinds of knowledge arise, and that is his path of seeing. By obtaining that, the Bodhisattva enters into the true and flawless state. He is born into the lineage of the Tathagatas. He obtains the first ground, and also experiences the benefits of that ground. Having previously obtained calm abiding and insight, he obtains the two kinds of objects, the image with conceptualization and the image without conceptualization. Thus, by obtaining the path of seeing, he obtains the object of the limit of things, and when he enters the path of meditation on the higher and higher grounds and contemplates those three objects, it is like this: for example, just as someone takes out a very large child with a very small child. In the same way, by eliminating the internal signs in the manner of taking out children, he completely eliminates all the signs that are in accordance with the part of all afflictions. When the signs are eliminated, the bad destinies are also eliminated. Having completely destroyed all the signs and bad destinies, gradually on the higher and higher grounds, like gold, the mind is completely subdued, and until the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, he becomes perfectly enlightened, and also obtains the object of completely fulfilling the needs, that is Maitreya.
