It is because of the transformation. Maitreya, listen therefore, and I will explain to you the summary of the characteristics of emptiness. Maitreya, the characteristics of other-dependence, and the characteristics of perfect accomplishment, in all cases, are completely afflicted and completely purified by the imagined characteristics, and the very nature of complete separation, and the non-apprehension of that in that, that is called the summary of the characteristics of emptiness in the Great Vehicle. Blessed One, with what kind of samadhi are śamatha and vipaśyanā summarized? The Buddha said, Maitreya, whatever various samadhis have been taught by me, whether by śrāvakas, bodhisattvas, or tathāgatas, should be known as summarized. Blessed One, from what causes and conditions do śamatha and vipaśyanā arise? Maitreya, they arise from the cause of completely pure discipline, and from the cause of completely pure views arising from hearing and thinking. Blessed One, please tell me what their fruits are? Maitreya, complete purification of mind is the fruit, and complete purification of wisdom is the fruit. Maitreya, all the worldly and transworldly virtuous dharmas of the śrāvakas, bodhisattvas, or tathāgatas should be known as the fruit of śamatha and vipaśyanā. Blessed One, what is the function of śamatha and vipaśyanā? Maitreya, it is to liberate from the two kinds of bonds, namely the bonds of signs and the bonds of bad migrations. Blessed One, what are the five faults spoken of by the Blessed One? Which of them are the faults of śamatha? Which are the faults of vipaśyanā? Which are the faults of both? Maitreya, attachment to the body and possessions is a fault of śamatha. Not obtaining the noble speech as desired is a fault of vipaśyanā. Dwelling in a mixed state and being content with little is a fault of both, because one does not cultivate, and the other does not bring cultivation to completion. Blessed One, what are the five obscurations? Which of them are the obscurations of śamatha? Which are the obscurations of vipaśyanā?

What are the obscurations? Which are the obscurations of both? Maitreya, excitement and regret are the obscurations of calm abiding. Drowsiness and sleep, and doubt are the obscurations of insight. Desire for sensual pleasures and malice are the obscurations of both. World Honored One, in what way is the path of calm abiding completely purified? Maitreya, when drowsiness and sleep are completely and thoroughly eliminated. World Honored One, in what way is the path of insight widely purified? Maitreya, when excitement and regret are completely and thoroughly eliminated. World Honored One, how many ways should a Bodhisattva who has entered calm abiding and insight know the mind's distraction? The Buddha said: Maitreya, there are five types: distraction of attention, external distraction, internal distraction, sign distraction, and distraction of bad states. Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva abandons the attention associated with the Great Vehicle and completely falls into the attention associated with the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, that is the distraction of attention. If the mind is allowed to wander externally to the five sensual qualities, noise, signs, discriminations, afflictions, near afflictions, and external objects, that is external distraction. If one is overwhelmed by drowsiness and sleep, or tastes the flavor of samadhi, or is afflicted by any near affliction of samadhi, that is internal distraction. If, relying on external signs, one attends to the signs of the inner samadhi's field of activity, that is sign distraction. If, relying on inner attention, one conceives of the aggregates of bad states as "I" with regard to the feeling that arises from it, that is the distraction of bad states. World Honored One, from the first Bodhisattva ground up to the Tathagata ground, what is the antidote to calm abiding and insight? Maitreya, calm abiding and insigh
