How should it be done? Maitreya, the different conduct of those is like that, the Blessed One said. Blessed One, what is the wisdom of a Bodhisattva who cultivates calm abiding and insight, knowing each dharma as it is, and knowing each meaning as it is? What is seeing? Maitreya, I explain knowing and seeing with many different names, but I will explain it briefly. What is the wisdom of calm abiding and insight that focuses on mixed dharmas, that is knowing. What is the wisdom of calm abiding and insight that focuses on unmixed dharmas, that is seeing. Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva who cultivates calm abiding and insight eliminate signs with what attention, with what sign, and how? Maitreya, by attending to suchness, the signs of dharma and the signs of meaning are eliminated. In name, the self-nature of name is not seen, and the sign of its place is not truly seen, therefore it is eliminated. Just as with name, words, letters, and all meanings should be understood in the same way. Maitreya, between elements, the self-nature of the element is not seen, and the sign of its place is not truly seen, therefore it is eliminated. Blessed One, what? Is the sign of knowing each meaning of suchness as it is also eliminated? Maitreya, knowing each meaning of suchness as it is has no sign, it is not seen, so what can be eliminated? Maitreya, knowing each meaning of suchness as it is overcomes all the signs of dharma and meaning, I do not say that it can be overcome by anything. Blessed One, Blessed One, with the analogy of a container with muddy water, and the analogy of a mirror that is not completely clean, and the analogy of a turbid lake, how one cannot examine the sign of one's own face, but the opposite can, similarly, an uncultivated mind cannot know reality as it is, but a cultivated mind can, what you said, what is the individual examination of the mind? What does suchness refer to?

Thus he spoke. He said: Maitreya, because the mind separately examines in three ways, namely, the mind arising from hearing separately examines, the mind arising from thinking separately examines, and the mind arising from meditation separately examines. This is understood from the Suchness of the Alaya-vijñana and is completely taught. World-Honored One, how many characteristics are eliminated when a Bodhisattva thus correctly understands the Dharma and meaning separately and enters the stage of eliminating characteristics? And by what are these eliminated? Maitreya, there are ten; these are eliminated by emptiness. What are the ten? When one correctly understands the meaning of the Dharma separately, all the various characteristics of words and letters are eliminated by the emptiness of all dharmas. When one correctly understands the meaning of the Suchness of abiding separately, the characteristics that follow the continuity of arising, ceasing, abiding, and changing are also eliminated by the emptiness of characteristics, and also eliminated by the emptiness of beginninglessness and endlessness. When one correctly understands the meaning of grasping separately, the characteristic of the view of the perishable collection and the characteristic of the conceit of "I," are eliminated by internal emptiness and unobtainable emptiness. When one correctly understands the meaning of what is grasped separately, the characteristic of attachment to enjoyment is eliminated by external emptiness. When one correctly understands separately the arising for the sake of complete enjoyment, the service of men and women, and the possession of resources, the characteristic of inner happiness and the characteristic of outer suffering are eliminated by the emptiness of inner and outer and the emptiness of self-nature. When one correctly understands the meaning of the place separately, all the characteristics of immeasurability are eliminated by great emptiness. Relying on the formless, the characteristic of liberation for the peace of what is eliminated by conditioned emptiness. When one correctly understands the meaning of the Suchness of characteristics separately, the characteristic of the absence of a person

, as well as the characteristic of selflessness in phenomena, as well as the characteristic of mere consciousness, as well as what is the characteristic of ultimate reality, that is the emptiness that transcends limits, as well as the emptiness of no-thingness, as well as the emptiness of the nature of no-thingness, as well as the ultimate emptiness that eliminates. When each of the meanings of pure Suchness is truly known, what is the characteristic of the unconditioned, what is the characteristic of immutability, that is the emptiness of the unconditioned, as well as the emptiness of non-abandonment that eliminates. What is the characteristic of emptiness that is the antidote to that characteristic, the characteristic of emptiness that is contemplated upon, that is the emptiness of emptiness that eliminates. World-Honored One, when eliminating the ten characteristics, what characteristic is eliminated, and from what bond of characteristics is liberation attained? Maitreya, the characteristic of the image of the object of Samadhi is eliminated, and from the characteristic of the bond of all afflictions, liberation is attained, and that is also eliminated. Maitreya, those emptinesses should actually be known as the antidotes to those characteristics. Each one is also not incapable of being the antidote to all characteristics. Maitreya, for example, although ignorance does not accomplish all the afflictions between aging and death, because it is a close and very close condition, as it is shown that it actually accomplishes actions, so it should be viewed in this way as well. World-Honored One, if Bodhisattvas in the Great Vehicle realize what, then there will be no arrogance in the nature of emptiness, so what is the summary of the nature of emptiness that does not regress? Then, the World-Honored One gave the Bodhisattva Maitreya the words "Good, good." Maitreya, because you asked the Tathagata about this meaning in order to prevent the Bodhisattvas from regressing from emptiness, good, good. Why is that? Maitreya, a Bodhisattva who regresses from emptiness regresses from all the Great Vehicle.
