If it is not, it is because of discriminating the image with discrimination. Blessed One, what is the image that is the object of contemplation in samadhi? Is it said to be different from that mind? Or is it said to be not different? Maitreya, it should be said that it is not different. Why is it not different? Because that image is merely consciousness. Maitreya, I have said that consciousness is only distinguished by the object of consciousness. Blessed One, the image that is the object of contemplation in samadhi, if it is not different from that mind, then how does that mind discriminate that mind itself? The Buddha said: Maitreya, one does not discriminate any dharma in that. However, what is the mind that arises in that way like? Maitreya, it is like this, for example, relying on form, in the center of a very pure mirror, although one sees the form itself, one thinks that one sees the image. Therefore, the image appearing on that form seems to be different in meaning. Similarly, that mind that arises in that way, and what is called the image that is the object of contemplation in samadhi, also seems to be different in meaning from that. Blessed One, the image that naturally exists in the mind that appears as form, etc., of sentient beings, is it also not different from that mind? The Buddha said: Maitreya, it should be said that it is not different. For children with inverted minds, because they do not understand that those images are merely the true nature of consciousness, they think in an inverted way. Blessed One, in what situation does a Bodhisattva cultivate one-pointed vipassana? The Buddha said: When one continuously attends to the mind, one attends to the characteristics of the mind itself. In what situation does one cultivate one-pointed samatha? The Buddha said: When one continuously attends to the mind, one attends to the uninterrupted mind itself. In what situation do samatha and vipassana become mixed, becoming equal union? The Buddha said: When one attends to the one-pointedness of the mind. Blessed One

What is the characteristic of the past mind? What is the image associated with conceptualization, which is the object of loving-kindness insight and the realm of meditative absorption? What is the uninterrupted mind? What is the mind that focuses on the image, which is the object of loving-kindness calm abiding? What is one-pointedness of mind? It is the understanding that the image, which is the object of meditative absorption, is merely a manifestation of consciousness, and after understanding this, what is the subsequent mental engagement with suchness? Blessed One, how many types of insight are there? Loving-kindness has three aspects: that which arises from characteristics, that which arises from thorough investigation, and that which arises from individual discernment. What is that which arises from characteristics? It is the insight that focuses solely on the image associated with conceptualization, which is the object of meditative absorption. What is that which arises from thorough investigation? It is the insight that engages the mind in order to thoroughly understand those phenomena that have not been well understood by wisdom. What is that which arises from individual discernment? It is the insight that engages the mind in order to experience bliss through liberation from those phenomena that have been well understood by wisdom. How many types of calm abiding are there? The Blessed One replied: Following the uninterrupted mind, it should also be described as threefold. Likewise, loving-kindness, calm abiding has eight aspects: the first dhyana, the second, the third, the fourth dhyana, the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Again, there are four aspects: immeasurable loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and immeasurable equanimity. Blessed One, are calm abiding and insight also said to abide in the Dharma? Or are they said not to abide in the Dharma? What is it to abide in the Dharma? What is it not to abide in the Dharma? How does loving-kindness grasp, and by following the characteristics of the contemplated Dharma, what is calm abiding and insight in meaning, that is abiding in the Dharma. Not relying on the grasped and contemplated Dharma, but relying on the instructions and followings of others
