It is said that he obtained forbearance of the Dharma of non-origination. Chapter Thirty-Nine. Beginning with the Differentiation of the Establishment of Dharma, the excellent distinctions of the paths of tranquility and insight, which are encompassed by yoga, should be understood as they appear in the Sutra Unraveling the Intent. The Bodhisattva Maitreya asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, where does a Bodhisattva abide, and upon what does he rely, to cultivate tranquility and insight in the Great Vehicle? The Blessed One replied: Maitreya, he abides upon and relies upon the Differentiation of the Establishment of Dharma, and not abandoning the aspiration for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The Blessed One spoke of these four objects of focus for tranquility and insight: the image with conceptualization, the image without conceptualization, the limit of reality, and the complete accomplishment of intention. Blessed One, which is the object of focus for tranquility? He replied: One, namely the image without conceptualization. Which is the object of focus for insight? He replied: Only one, namely the image with conceptualization. Which are the objects of focus for both of these? He replied: Two, namely the limit of reality and the complete accomplishment of intention. Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva, relying upon and abiding in these four objects of focus for tranquility and insight, completely seek tranquility and become skilled in insight? He replied: Maitreya, the Differentiation of the Establishment of Dharma that I have taught, namely the sections of the Sutras, the sections of the Songs, the sections of the Prophecies, the sections of the Verses, the sections of the Inspired Utterances, the sections of the Narratives, the sections of the Jataka Tales, the sections of the Such-like Occurrences, the sections of the Birth Stories, the sections of the Extensive Treatises, the sections of the Wondrous Dharmas, and the sections of the Discourses on Definitive Meanings, all of which have been explained to the Bodhisattvas, those the Bodhisattva should listen to well, hold well, recite fluently, contemplate well with the mind, and thoroughly understand through seeing.

Then, he dwells alone in a secluded place, correctly placing (the mind) within. He contemplates the Dharma that has been well considered, and he contemplates with his mind. With whatever mind he contemplates, that mind continuously contemplates within, and that is contemplation. Having entered in this way and remained there many times, whatever arises as extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind is called quiescence (shamatha). Thus, a Bodhisattva seeks quiescence completely. Having attained extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind, abiding therein, abandoning the aspects of thought, those Dharmas that have been considered, within the realm of samadhi, are individually cognized as images, and faith arises. Thus, with respect to those images in the realm of samadhi, discriminating the meaning of what is to be known, and well discriminating, completely understanding, completely examining, enduring, desiring, differentiating, viewing, and contemplating, this is called insight (vipashyana). Thus, a Bodhisattva is skilled in insight. Blessed One, when a Bodhisattva focuses his mind on an object of mind, contemplating within, until he has not yet attained extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind, what should this contemplation be called? Maitreya, it is not quiescence, but it should be said to be associated with faith and similarity that are in accordance with quiescence. Blessed One, until a Bodhisattva attains extreme pliancy of body and extreme pliancy of mind, what should the contemplation of those Dharmas that have been well considered, contemplating within the images in the realm of samadhi, be called? Maitreya, it is not insight, but it should be said to be associated with faith and similarity that are in accordance with insight. Blessed One, are the path of quiescence and the path of insight different? Or are they not different? The Buddha said: Maitreya, they are neither different, nor are they not different. Why are they not different? Because insight relies on the mind that focuses on an object. Why are they different?
